In the backyard of their country estate, Constantine Treplev is presenting his new play to his mother, the celebrated Russian stage actress Arkadina, and her lover Trigorin, a successful writer of fiction. Constantine’s girlfriend Nina is the star of his play. This backyard performance acts as the catalyst for a four year journey of romantic and artistic conflict between mother and son and their lovers. Chekhov’s first theatrical masterpiece, this 1895 comedic drama explores the human capacity to create and destroy the things we love, the challenge of being an artist, and the human need to move beyond the traditions of the past.
