The Annenberg Center For The Performing Arts Opens 2018-19 Season! The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Pennsylvania opens its 2018-19 season September 28 and 29 with Australia's bold, contemporary circus troupe, Circa, performing the U.S. premiere of Humans, a tour de force with ten highly-skilled acrobats, a bare stage, and a stirring journey of what it means to be human. Straddling the borders between circus arts, theatre, and contemporary dance, Australia's bold contemporary circus troupe Circa explores the expressive possibilities of the human body at its extremes. How much can we take as humans? Where are our limits? How much weight can we carry? Who can we trust to support our load?

Created by renowned theatre and circus director Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa ensemble, this heart-stopping performance leads us to reflect on the physical and emotional strength it takes to overcome the burdens we carry. Humans is a presented by Annenberg Center Live and NextMove Dance, and is a co-presentation with FringeArts. Performances are Friday, September 28 at 8 PM and Saturday, September 29 at 2 PM.

The same weekend, Grammy Award-nominated, jazz composer/pianist Vijay Iyer makes his Annenberg Center debut in a rare solo performance, one night only, Saturday, September 29 at 8 PM. A Harvard University professor and MacArthur Fellow, Iyer's music is adventuresome, masterful and emotionally resonant. His appearance is the first in a season-long emphasis on jazz piano, with later appearances by Hiromi and the Emmet Cohen Trio.

"Known for nurturing and presenting innovative programming across a spectrum of art forms, the Annenberg Center is a key player on both on the University of Pennsylvania campus and in Philadelphia's cultural community," says Executive and Artistic Director Christopher A. Gruits. "Our 2018-19 season celebrates this important dual role, using the performing arts to reflect on current events and explore our common connections through a wide array of musical styles, cutting-edge theatre and the best in contemporary dance. It's truly a season that showcases the power of the arts to transform lives."

Tickets for all performances are available at AnnenbergCenter.org or 215.898.3900.
