Analog Arts and Elizabeth Huston will present the Philadelphia premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's "KLANG: The 24 Hours of the Day" at FringeArts on April 7 & 8, 2018. "KLANG" is a 21-part cycle of individual pieces and the final, epic statement of one of modern music's most important composers. Charting the journey of the soul out of the body into the afterlife, KLANG is a kind of requiem for Stockhausen and a fitting capstone to his monumental career.
Analog Arts' U.S. premiere of KLANG was hailed as one of the 10 Best Classical Music Concerts of 2016 (New York Magazine). The Philadelphia premiere will be only the third complete performance of KLANG in the world.
Several installments of "KLANG" will be performed by artists who closely collaborated with Stockhausen in his final years, including Stuart Gerber ("Heaven's Door") and the Cologne-based ensemble musikFabrik ("Glanz", "Harmonien", "Schönheit", "Nebadon"). This production also features performances by Christopher Oldfather ("Natürliche Dauern") and Lilac 94 ("Freude"), as well as original light paintings by Thomas Dunn.
Listeners will be able to hear all 21 pieces on both days of the production. Stockhausen experts and musicologists will be on hand to answer questions and give informal lectures about the composer and his life. Performances begin at 10:00 a.m. and run until midnight. Admission is $40 for one day, or $75 for both days. Passes are on sale now by FringeArts.
This project was made possible by support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, Goethe Institut, and the Penn Treaty Special Services District. A full schedule for KLANG will be released in February 2018.
