The seventh edition of the International Opera Festival Alejandro Granda introduce this 19, 22 and 25, Romeo and Juliet, one of the greatest masterpieces of the French repertoire. This opera was composed by Charles Gounod to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on Shakespeare's tragedy. It was released on April 27, 1867 at the Théatre-Lyrique in Paris (France).
This year the Festival presents the consecrated Granda tenor Juan Diego Flórez making its world debut as Romeo; and promising young Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva, in the role of Juliet. The cast is completed by bass Sergey Artamonov, as Lorenzo; and baritone Alexey Lavrov as Mercutio. The Youth Symphony Orchestra Symphony for Peru will be directed by Manuel López Gómez. And the stage direction is by the French Jean-Louis Pichon, premiered in 2013 at the Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile production.

On the work and the author
Charles Gounod, faithful fan of the genius of Shakespeare, took and used the story of the lovers of Verona to reach audiences of his time with this opera. It is also known the influence that the magnificent coral Berlioz symphony inspired by the above story.
In that sense, and after several years of work, Roméo et Juliette proved a purely romantic opera melodrama and highlighting the most lyrical moments of the tragedy of the English playwright. A work that features memorable sites such as the famous "Je veux vivre" (I want to live) sung by Juliet in act; or "Ah! Lève-toi, soleil "(Ah Get up sun ...), sung by Romeo in the famous balcony scene at the beginning of the second act.
