As the hit West End show Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Sam Mendes, approaches its second anniversary, producers today announced the cast that will take it into its third year. Alongside Jonathan Slinger as Willy Wonka will be Kraig Thornber (Grandpa George), Lara Denning (Mrs Bucket) and Mark Oxtoby (Jerry), among other new names. Originating company members Ross Dawes and Derek Hagen will take over the roles of Mr Salt and Mr Bucket respectively.

Today in 1982, Macbeth opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it ran for 21 performances. Written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is about a regicide and its aftermath. It is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy and is believed to have been written sometime between 1603 and 1607. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare's play is April 1611, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the Globe Theatre.

Folger Theatre continues its relationship with Shakespeare's Globe in London with the touring production of KING LEAR, coming to D.C. for a limited engagement of 18 performances, September 5 - 21. Directed by Bill Buckhurst, the acclaimed production has toured for months in the UK, Europe, and Asia. The Folger will be its debut here in the States. Capturing the imagination of young and old alike, the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical continues to play to packed houses at the Cambridge Theatre in London. Matilda has now been seen by almost 1.5million people since it transferred to the West End in October 2011. The production was commissioned by the RSC and played to sold-out audiences at the RSC's The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon for twelve weeks from November 2010 to January 2011. Tickets are now on sale until Sunday 24 May 2015.

Earlier this year, the Royal Shakespeare Company's Henry IV Part 2 was filmed for 'Live from Stratford-upon-Avon,' the RSC program that screens the world's greatest classical theatre company from Shakespeare's home town around the world through a continued partnership with Picturehouse Entertainment.
