This weekend, Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook closed its 2012 season with two shows from Broadway star Laura Benanti on February 11th, and two by the legendary Elaine Paige on Friday, February 11 and Saturday, February 12. Rehearsals now underway for the new Broadway production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary seven-time Tony Award-winning musical, EVITA,.The musical stars Olivier Award-winning Argentinean actress Elena Roger making her Broadway debut as Eva Peron, world renowned music artist Ricky Martin as Che and Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris as Juan Peron. The cast will also feature Christina DeCicco as the alternate for Eva Peron (Weds eve; Sat mat), Max von Essen as Magaldi and Rachel Potter as the Mistress. Directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Michael Grandage and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford, EVITA begins previews on March 12 and Opening Night is set for April 5, 2012. For 16 nights the series is exploring the best of the golden age of musical standards through to today's most dynamic songwriting. Two of the brightest lights from the new Broadway generation-two-time Tony nominee Gavin Creel and Stephen Oremus, the Tony-winning music director and arranger of Wicked and The Book of Mormon recently appeared in a secial concert for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series. The duo joined forces on February 4, for a special evening that mixes alternative rock and theater tunes with new material to create a modern American songbook. Broadway-bound Ricky Martin will travel to GLEE's McKinley High to play 'the hottest Spanish teacher ever in the history of Ohio,' in next week's episode, airing February 7. Martin will soon star as Ché alongside Elena Roger and Michael Cerveris in the highly-anticipated upcoming Broadway production of EVITA, directed by Michael Grandage and choreographed by Rob Ashford. This is the first new Broadway production of the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical since it debuted on Broadway more than 30 years ago.

Though the producers of GLEE are minimizing the themed episodes this season, they have a Spanish/Latin-themed episode coming up, guest-starring Ricky Martin. Naya Rivera, who plays Santana, was particularly excited about being able to perform with the Grammy-winner, as she told MTV at the SAG awards. In the following video, Rivera talks about her thoughts on her character, and what exactly dancing with Ricky Martin is like.

Last week on May 3, the New York Pops joined forces with stars of the stage to celebrate Frank Sinatra as part of the Pop's 27th Birthday Concert and Gala. Entitled The Best Is Yet To Come: Celebrating the Legacy of Frank Sinatra, the event took place at Carnegie Hall and was hosted by Liz Smith. Angela Lansbury, the great star of stage, film, and television, was honored April 12 with the first annual Stephen Sondheim Award, given by Virginia's Signature Theatre at a black-tie Gala Benefit at the Embassy of Italy. The Sondheim Award, established by Signature last year in the name of America's most influential contemporary musical theater writer and composer, was presented to the actress by Mr. Sondheim himself.
