Tonight may be the big night but last evening, June 9, The Tony Awards Administration Committee hosted the annual Tony Eve Cocktail Party Tony at the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts to celebrate this year's Special Tony Award winners. The Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre were established in 1990 and are awarded annually to institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but are not eligible in any of the established Tony Award categories. This year's Tony Honors were presented to: Freddie Gershon, CEO and Chairman of Musica Theatre International, Artie Siccardi, Production Supervisor of Arthur Siccardi Theatrical Services, Inc. who has overseen more than 200 Broadway productions, and TDF Open Doors, Theatre Development Fund's arts education program.

At last night's 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards, Cher and Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-CA) presented the Stephen F. Kolzak Award to Chaz Bono, and Benicio Del Toro presented the Vanguard Award to Josh Hutcherson. Glee stars Max Adler and Grant Gustin presented the Rodemeyer family. The U.K. touring production of CHESS, featuring a company of actor-musicians playing their own accompaniment, is set to open at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre Sept. 24. The production will officially open on September 28 and run through Oct. 30 before opening in London's West End.

Student Celebration at the Majestic Theatre (245 West 44th Street) today, Monday, June 6th from 10:30 AM to noon. Each school performed a song from their production of a student version of a classic musical, including Annie JR., Once on this Island JR., Seussical JR., Disney's Aladdin JR. and Guys and Dolls JR. The production of Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Tim Rice's CHESS at the Signature Theatre opened August 10 and will run through September 26. Broadway's Jill Paice (Curtains, The 39 Steps), Euan Morton (Boy George in Taboo, Sondheim on Sondheim), and Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose, Rent) star in the rock musical Chess, which was directed by Signature's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer. Written by Mamma Mia! composers Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson with Evita and Lion King lyricist Tim Rice, the 1984 cult musical of Cold War competition in love and chess is being given its first major Washington area production. Chess will be performed in the fabulous intimacy of the 276-seat MAX Theatre through September 26, 2010.
