Jimmy Roberts' perky music with book and adorably humble lyrics by Joe DiPietro are cute, funny, poignant and totally relatable. It holds up a mirror with a gentle, warm and charming hand and encourages us to laugh at ourselves.

Every year, thousands of playwrights respond to Papatango Theatre Company's call for their New Writing Prize. 2019 saw 1406 entries from across the UK and Republic of Ireland, from which only one was going to be chosen for a full production and a further commission from the company. I had the chance to catch the SECT season opener, Mamma Mia!, last weekend and it was sensational! The cast, a great mixture of high energy women and men ranging in age from young 20 and 30-something newcomers to some SECT theatre mainstays, all came together and blew the roof off the Orpheum with this tribute to the Swedish mega-hit band. You can't help but sing (and dance) along to every song, because you know them all by heart.

I was super excited to learn that SF Playhouse was kicking off its 19-20 season with Clare Barron's a?oeDance Nationa?? based on what I'd read and heard about its 2018 world premiere at New York's Playwrights Horizons. I was certain it was going to be right up my alley: an edgy, satirical, unsettling play that looks at gender, body image, burgeoning sexuality and our unhealthy obsession with competition and winning a?' and from a feminist perspective to boot. As added enticement, the play won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and was a 2019 Pulitzer finalist. It thus makes me very sad to report that, having now actually seen the play, I am left mystified by the rapturous response it received in prior productions.
