When I was approached about directing Death of a Salesman for Theatre Memphis, I hesitated for a moment. Several questions crossed my mind. Did I have any fresh insights to bring to the show? After all, it is one of the most produced scripts of the American canon. In fact, there had been an acclaimed production of the show in Memphis in the not too distant past. Was it too soon to do another version? The show was scheduled to open in late January, 2014, which meant rehearsing during the holidays. Would enough people turn out to audition knowing the time commitment? And would the right people audition, people who could play the demanding roles of Willy, Linda, Biff and Happy? Not to mention the supporting roles that may appear for only one or two scenes but are absolutely vital to the story?

Berkeley Repertory Theatre announces the world premiere of The House that will not Stand, a historical comedic drama commissioned from award-winning poet-playwright and Oakland native Marcus Gardley. Sensuous, witty, heartbreaking, and uplifting - The House that will not Stand unearths a story about free women of color in 1836 New Orleans, where black Creole women entered into common-law marriages with affluent white men. When her wealthy lover mysteriously dies, Beartrice Albans' foundation of security hangs precariously by a thread. She is left to fend for her three unwed daughters in a world where freedom must be carefully negotiated. Told in a rich and lyrical river of words, this new play was developed through The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. It's helmed by Patricia McGregor, whose many credits include the celebrated production of Spunk at California Shakespeare Theater. The House that will not Stand begins previews on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage on Friday, January 31, opens on Wednesday, February 5 and runs through Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Artistic Director Molly Smith tackles a unique, in-the-round staging of Bertolt Brecht's powerhouse anti-war play Mother Courage and Her Children at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. Iconic stage and screen actress and Academy Award nominee Kathleen Turner returns to Arena Stage following her sold-out run of Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins to make her professional singing debut as the tough-as-nails matriarch Mother Courage-a single mother determined to keep her family alive and her business afloat during war. Using the David Hare translation, the show fuses politics and satire to paint an unforgettable and provocative portrait of war, incorporating more than 10 pieces of original music composed in a rollicking, gypsy-punk style and performed by cast members doubling as musicians. Mother Courage and Her Children runs January 31-March 9, 2014 in the Fichandler Stage.

Canadian Rep Theatre kicks off the new year with the English-language premiere of Pacamambo by Quebec's award-winning Wajdi Mouawad, translated by Shelley Tepperman, and directed by Canadian Rep Artistic Director Ken Gass. This emotionally powerful and lyrical work opens January 21 and runs to February 2 (previewing from January 18) at The Citadel in Regent Park.
How odd that Theatreworks should follow up Death of a Salesman, arguably the most brutal portrait of disappointed ambition, with It's a Wonderful Life, another tale of a man who suffers a series of unrealized ambitions and missed opportunities but who is held up not as a tragedy but an exemplar of a well-lived existence. If Willy Loman is the embodiment of the dark side of the American Dream, then George Bailey is the assurance that dream can be lived in simple and unexpected ways.

Hotel Nikko San Francisco and Michael Feinstein are thrilled to welcome Tony Award nominee - and San Francisco legend - Sharon McNight to Feinstein's at the Nikko for two performances only - Thursday, January 16, 2014 (8 p.m.) and Friday, January 17, 2014 (8 p.m.). Making her Feinstein's at the Nikko debut, McNight will present her all-new show, The First 30 Years - an introspective retrospect from Moose Hall to Carnegie Hall (and all the gin joints on the way). Sharing her quixotic experiences from standing on a stage made from stacked beer cases in San Francisco's Castro District to starring on Broadway in Starmites and her indelible appearances in the world's bistros, McNight will perform songs by Irving Berlin, Billy Joel, Randy Newman, Willy Nelson and many new composers with her trademark comedy in-between. Joan Edgar will serve as Musical Director. Tickets for Sharon McNight range in price from $25-$35 and are available now by calling 866.663.1063 or visiting www.ticketweb.com.
