Since our entry on April 6, 1917, many books have been written detailing the war and exploring its effects on the world and nation at large, but no comprehensive history of the war's effects on Kentucky existed. At the outbreak of the war, most citizens had relatively little government interaction in their daily lives. In addition, Kentuckians' unique way of identifying by county did little to promote unity. However, unlike the Civil War, which pitted brother against brother, Kentuckians of all ages, races, both sexes, and every political, economic, and social status were expected to “do their part.” The Kentucky that emerged from the war was markedly different than the state that entered it.
The Tony-nominated director Eleanor Reissa is set to helm New Yiddish Rep's contemporary staging of Sholem Asch's notorious drama 'God of Vengeance' at La MaMa this winter. The Yiddish language production's Off-Broadway opening is on Christmas Day, Sunday December 25 at 7:30pm with previews beginning Thursday December 22. It will run for five weeks and 33 performances through Sunday January 22.

Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) opens its 40th season with Calixto Bieito's bold staging of Georges Bizet's Carmen, the largest production the company has mounted in its four decades. Set in the arid earthiness of post-Franco Spanish North Africa, Carmen is a powerful account of a defiantly free-spirited woman and her obsessive lover. With the familiar story and iconic score that opera buffs and casual opera-goers alike know and love, BLO's Carmen opens September 23 for four performances through October 2. The run marks the company's debut at the Boston Opera House whereCarmen will be the first professional opera produced at the venerable theater since 1991.
