Ten playwrights have won the New York Community Trust Helen Merrill Playwright Awards, honoring established and emerging writers for the theater. The winners are currently producing work on topics ranging from basement dwelling families in the middle of the 21st century to the 19th century all-black community that faced destruction in order to create Central Park.

Small-town life is anything but a picnic in William Inge's newly discovered, previously unproduced play OFF THE MAIN ROAD currently receiving its decades-delayed world premiere at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in the Berkshires. This dense and diffuse melodrama meanders through a forest of darkness and despair only to return its three generations of hapless women back to the starting point with little to show for their travels.

According to The New York Times, television star Dylan McDermott has signed on to lead the stage adaptation of Tennessee Williams' 1956 film BABY DOLL at McCarter Theatre in New Jersey this fall. The production will run Sept. 11-October 11.

It was just back in late-May when we reported that Roger Rees, then starring in THE VISIT on Broadway opposite Chita Rivera had departed the show on a medical leave. Today, we are sad to share the news that the star passed away on Friday evening, at home in New York at 71. According to a statement from his publicist, he passed away at home after battling a brief illness.
