Becky Foster is stuck in neutral-middle aged, in middle management and a middling marriage-until an honest misunderstanding with a wealthy widower offers her the chance at an exciting double life...and she takes it. Now she's frantically juggling to keep her two worlds apart before everything threatens to come crashing down on her. It's enough to drive Becky off a cliff, and she's taking the audience along for the ride! Dietz, a highly prolific author and one of the most widely produced playwrights in America, was commissioned by Seattle's A Contemporary Theatre to write Becky's New Car in 2008 as a birthday present from one of the theatre's donors to his wife. Becky's New Car, by Steven Dietz, opened Friday, September 16th on the Mud Creek Barn stage. In this hilarious comedy, Dietz takes you on a ride through the mid-life crisis of an everyday woman as she tries to find a way out of her boring housework, boring job, boring everything! The play is a touching romantic comedy about middled-aged Becky Foster (Forba Shepherd), her roofer husband Joe (Ken Delp) and their matriculating son Chris (Dustin Van Treese). Becky looks for change on the horizon when you also meet the others in her road of life, Steve (Paul Sommer), Walter Flood (Collin Moore), Kensington (Heather Kroetz) and Ginger (Judy McGroarty)-- each of whom evoke the laughter of theater patrons.
Directed by the company's producing artistic director Vali Forrister, Becky's New Car is a perfect choice for Actors Bridge, providing a showcase for a group of talented actors so charming and so engaging that you might find yourself falling a little bit in love with the whole lot. In fact, I'd probably drink the bathwater of the entire cast, so completely believable are they in this sharply written, inventively staged production. Take my advice: You best go look under the hood of Becky's New Car before its run ends on August 7.
