Broadway star Tovah Feldshuh guest starred on last night's episode of The CW's CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND titled 'My Mom, Greg's Mom and Josh's Sweet Dance Moves!'
Earlier this week, West Covina, California honored The CW's musical comedy series CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, which is set in the town two hours from the beach (four with traffic). At the ceremony were Executive Producer and Co-Creator Aline Brosh McKenna and series stars Donna Lynne Champlin and Vincent Rodriguez III.
On last night's episode of The CW's musical-themed comedy CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, series star Santino Fontana (CINDERELLA, FROZEN) showed off his song and dance skills in a dream sequence in which Rebecca gives his character Greg a shot at romance.
It's been quite a fall for one of Broadway's crowned princes. At the end of August, Santino Fontana finished filming the first season of SHADES OF BLUE, opposite Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, which premieres on NBC on January 14th. Then, the next day, he married Jessica Hershberg, whom he met backstage at Birdland in 2011, both waiting to perform. The couple, who briefly overlapped as cast members in RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA, then headed to L.A. where Fontana began shooting the new musical comedy CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND. Hershberg, having adopted her married name, just recently headed back to New York to begin rehearsals for the Transport Group's production of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, where she will star opposite Jackie Hoffman (Lady Larkin and Princess Winnifred respectively).
There are a few things that you can say about the new musical-comedy CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND's first two episodes; they have been funny, and they have been crazy. However, as the show's resident heartthrob Vincent Rodriguez III told me, the audience is in for a lot more of both. 'It gets funnier and crazier, believe it or not,' Rodriguez said. 'It's just like this thing that rolls down the hill, and it doesn't stop, it just gets heavier each time.'
It's been a busy year for triple-threat Gabrielle Ruiz. After being a part of the closing cast of Broadway's IF/THEN, she then starred opposite Justin Guarini in Bucks County Playhouse's production of COMPANY, before appearing in the new Off-Broadway musical PIECE OF MY HEART: THE BERT BERNS STORY. Having been a working actress in New York and on National Tours for nearly a decade, as exciting as those shows were, Ruiz new what to expect from the experiences. However, starting tonight, she is in for something completely new. At 8/7 CT, Ruiz makes her debut on The CW's musical comedy CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND as Valenica, the long-term girlfriend of Josh, whom the show's titular ex moves cross country to be near. If you saw last week's premiere, you know that this can only lead to neurotic, slightly unhinged fun.
On the next CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND titled "Josh's Girlfriend Is Really Cool," when Rebecca learns that Josh has a gorgeous yoga instructor girlfriend named Valencia, she is determined to learn everything about her.
Theatre fans have had a tenuous relationship with television musicals over the past few years. Whether it was the casual dismissal of GLEE after its strong first season, the hate-watching of SMASH, or the mixed-reactions to THE SOUND OF MUSIC and PETER PAN LIVE!, theatre fans have set a pretty high bar for programs that look to bring musical programming from stage to screen. With THE WIZ LIVE! and GREASE LIVE! still months away, a new musical TV show premieres tonight starring Tony-nominee Santino Fontana and Obie Award-winner Donna Lynne Champlin. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, the joyfully kooky comedy that debuts on The CW tonight at 8:00pm ET, was created by Upright Citizen's Brigade member Rachel Bloom, who also stars as the titular crazy character.
The American Premiere Studio Cast Recording of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the only stage collaboration from two masters of the American musical, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, was recorded at the historic Avatar Studios from September 28-30. BroadwayWorld brings you a look inside the process below!
The cast of The CW's new musical comedy series, Rachel Bloom, Broadway alum Donna Lynne Champlin (BILLY ELLIOT, SWEENEY TODD), Vincent Rodriguez III (HERE LIES LOVE, ANYTHING GOES National Tour) and Pete Gardner launched a Tap Dance Challenge last Friday to benefit Broadway Cares Equity Fights Aids. Before busting out into an impressive routine, the CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND cast 'tapped' Broadway favorites, THE FLASH's Jesse L. Martin, MODERN FAMILY's Jesse Tyler Ferguson, SUPERGIRL's Jeremy Jordan, NCIS:LA's Barret Foa (SPELLING BEE, Off-Broadway's GODSPELL) and MADAM SECRETARY's Bebe Neuwirth.
Rachel Bloom is Rebecca Bunch, a successful driven, and possibly crazy young woman who impulsively gives up everything in a desperate attempt to find love and happiness...in suburban West Covina, CA. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND is coming to The CW this fall on Mondays at 8/7c, starring Broadway's Santino Fontana and more. The half-hour comedy features musical elements.
