BWW Interview: Catching up with Christian Struppeck, Book Writer of New Stephen Schwartz Musical SCHIKANEDER

Behind the scenes of the Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria everybody is working in high gear at the newest in-house production of the Vereinigte Buhnen Wien: SCHIKANEDER - the turbulent love story behind The Magic Flute. The new musical by Stephen Schwartz (music and lyrics), Christian Struppeck (book) and Sir Trevor Nunn (director) will have its world premiere on September 30th in Vienna. Just a little over a year after our last interview with Christian Struppeck, shortly after the musical SCHIKANEDER was announced, we got to catch up with him again to find out how the show has developed since then and how things are going in the rehearsal room.

SCHIKANEDER - The Turbulent Love Story Behind The Magic Flute, a romantic musical comedy about one of the 18th century's most colourful theatrical couples, celebrates its world premiere on 30 September 2016. It continues the tradition of the Vereinigte Buhnen Wien (VBW) of creating new in-house productions - the autumn production of SCHIKANEDER will be the Raimund Theater's twelfth world premiere musical. The two lead actors, Mark Seibert (Schikaneder) und Milica Jovanovic (Eleonore) recently went into the studio to record one of the songs from the musical by Stephen Schwartz  (Music and Lyrics) und VBW director Christian Struppeck (book) to give a small taste of the show: 'Traum Groß' (Dream Big).

SCHIKANEDER - die turbulente Liebesgeschichte hinter der Zauberflote ist eine romantische Musical-Komodie uber eines der wohl schillerndsten Theater-Ehepaare des 18. Jahrhunderts, die am 30. September 2016 ihre Weltpremiere feiert. Die VBW schließen somit an die Tradition der Eigenproduktionen an und bringen mit SCHIKANEDER die insgesamt zwolfte Musical-Urauffuhrung des Unternehmens im Herbst auf die Buhne des Raimund Theater. Gemeinsam bringen die beiden renommierten Kulturbetriebe Theater St.Gallen und die Vereinigten Buhnen Wien (VBW) im nachsten Jahr das Musical Don Camillo & Peppone auf die Buhne. Der Klassiker - bekannt durch die legendaren Romane und die beruhmten Verfilmungen - wird im April 2016 in der Schweiz Weltpremiere feiern, bevor dann im Herbst desselben Jahres im Wiener Ronacher die Österreichischen Erstauffuhrung uber die Buhne geht. Buch und Liedtexte stammen von Grammy-Preistrager Michael Kunze, dem erfolgreichsten deutschsprachigen Musicalautor, Buchautor, Liedtexter und Übersetzer, dessen Werke mit 79 Goldenen und Platin-Schallplatten ausgezeichnet wurden. Die Musik schrieb einer der prominentesten italienischen Komponisten, Dario Farina - vielen bekannt durch seine Kult-PopSongs wie Felicita oder durch seine viel beachteten Filmmusiken (Rossini).

Internationally renowned, Oscar- Grammy- and Golden Globe winning composer Stephen Schwartz is currently developing a brand new musical that is set to premier in the fall of 2016 in Vienna. The project is a collaboration with Christian Struppeck, artistic director of the Vereinigte Buhnen Wien (VBW), who is also writing the book for the show, and british star-director Trevor Nunn. The musical is centered on the live of the theater couple Emanuel and Eleonore Schikaneder, who were some of the most influencial people in the opera and theater world in the 18th Century Vienna, and the creation of one of the most famous opera pieces in history, The Magic Flute. The production is produced in-house by the VBW and I recently had the opportunty to spreak to book writer and artistic director Christian Struppeck about this exciting new musical and the international cooperation with Stephen Schwartz and Trevor Nunn.

REBECCA THE MUSICAL Con Mark C. Hotton Pleads Guilty

The New York Daily News reports that Mark C. Hotton admitted today, July 29, to conning funds from Broadway's REBECCA THE MUSCIAL by fictionalizing millionaire investors. Hotton said the scam was part of a plan to keep $65,000 in finder's fees. Hotton also plead guilty to a similar scheme with a Connecticut real estate firm, and will be tried tomorrow in Long Island in a money laundering conspiracy connected to Brooklyn's Maimonides Medical Center.

REBECCA to Arrive on Broadway Next Year? Fundraising Deadline Extended Through 2014

Back in April, BroadwayWorld reported that lead producer of REBECCA, Ben Sprecher, still intended to bring the new msuical to Broadway by the end of the year. After the Fall 2012 production was cancelled, Sprecher revealed to BroadwayWorld that another $7 million would be needed to reach the $15 million needed to bring the show to Broadway. For the show to open by the end of the year, the musical needed to raise an additional $7 million by the end of June.

Stephen Schwartz, the Oscar and Tony awarded composer and lyricist, will collaborate with Christian Struppeck on a musical about Emanual Schikander (1751-1812), the librettist of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera The Magic Flute. The musical, which will be mounted in Vienna, is tentatively planned for the 2015/2016 season.

On 17 March 2010 the curtain rose on a premiere in the RAIMUND THEATER. The VEREINIGTE BÜHNEN WIEN (VBW) welcomed visitors to the start of the comedy musical ICH WAR NOCH NIEMALS IN NEW YORK ('I Have Never Been to New York', a production licensed from STAGE ENTERTAINMENT) which features 21 songs by the great Austrian singer and entertainer Udo Jürgens. Following the premiere on 2 December 2007 in the TUI Operetta House in Hamburg, more than one million enthusiastic visitors went on board and set out on an epic voyage with the crew of a luxury liner. Since 17 March the same maritime flair can be enjoyed in Vienna.

New Frank Wildhorn Musical Premieres in Japan

The Japanese premiere of RUDOLF: THE LAST KISS, a musical composed by Frank Wildhorn, written by Jack Murphy, directed by Amon Miyamoto and produced by Toho. Co., Ltd. opened to an enthusiastic audience at the prestigious Imperial Theatre on Wednesday, May 6 in Tokyo.
