Musical theater is just the best thing, isn't it? If you agree, head west to the Plymouth Playhouse for the latest incarnation of the delightfully irreverent tribute to the love of all things musical theater, aka POP UP MUSICAL. Four friends, who just happen to be super talented local music-theater artists, created this show for the Fringe Festival a few years ago. It was so successful that they've expanded it and continue to bring it to various venues in the area (including the Jerome Hill Theater, where I saw it in 2013). While belting out showtunes, the cast also shares fun bits of trivia in the VH1 Pop Up Video style, using signs and video projections. It's truly a must see for anyone for whom the great American musical theater cannon holds a special place in their heart (and their iTunes).
Since their initial launch in 1993, the a cappella group The Kinsey Sicks have emerged as a cultural phenomenon within the LGBT community and far beyond. They've gone on to a multi-month run of their Off-Broadway show, seven CDs, concert appearances across the globe, and a plethora of music videos available on YouTube and elsewhere. Out of drag, they're known as Ben Schatz, Irwin Keller, Jeff Manabat and Spencer Brown. When in character with requisite costumes and makeup, they're Rachel, Winnie, Trixie and Trampolina. Either way, they've brought their delectable holiday show Oy Vey in a Manger! into the Metropolitan Room for a short stint (they'll appear again on Tuesday, December 9th at 7:00 PM and Wednesday, December 10th at 9:30 PM), for a nonstop hour of Yuletide merriment.
Pandemonium practically coursed through the private circles of Lani Misalucha loyalists the day a press statement officially announced the postponement of "La Nightingale Returns," the renowned singer's fourth major concert in Smart Araneta Coliseum since "Missing You" in 2007. Originally scheduled for October 17 and reset to almost two months later to December 6, the sudden date change sparked speculations of Lani backing out of the concert, which she recently dispelled on a primetime talk show as mere rumors.
