The legendary choreographer/dancer/theatre director Donald Saddler was awarded the Duke Ellington Center for the Arts' 1st Annual Duke Ellington 'Beyond Category' Award at a special tribute performance last night (Monday, June 13, 2011) in Merkin Concert Hall at the Elaine Kaufman Center in New York City. The award show was a fund-raiser in support of the Duke Ellington Arts Scholarship Fund.

Last night, May 23, the 2011 Drama Desk Awards Ceremony took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. The Book of Mormon, Anything Goes, War Horse and The Normal Heart were the night's big winners, with favorites Sutton Foster, Norbert Leo Butz, Bobby Cannavale, Frances McDormand, Laura Benanti, John Larroquette, Brian Bedford and Edie Falco taking home the evening's top performance honors. The last two of six Russian ballet dancers to famously defect from the U.S.S.R. to the United States in the 1960's and 70's - Valentina Kozlova and Leonid Kozlov, who sought political asylum on September 16, 1979 - will commemorate the 30th anniversary of their celebrated defection with a one-night-only dance concert, 'The Legacy Gala' on Monday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue) in New York City.
