S.T.A.G.E.-the annual Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event-marks its 26th presentation with a change in concept and a return to a familiar venue. Rather than its traditional salute to the music of a particular composer, this year's S.T.A.G.E. is entitled ORIGINAL CAST and will feature artists from theater, television and cabaret performing songs they originated in musical productions.

NUNSENSE Returns to Cherry Lane 6/15 For Its 25th Anniversary

One of the most successful musicals of all time, Dan Goggin's NUNSENSE will celebrate its silver birthday this summer with a 25th anniversary production presented by the Off-Broadway Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce St. in Manhattan) -- where the hilarious musical comedy about the Little Sisters of Hoboken debuted Off-Broadway in 1985 - with performances beginning June 15 and running through July 18, 2010, it has been announced by Angelina Fiordellisi, Artistic Director of Cherry Lane Theatre and herself a former member of the cast of NUNSENSE in 1987.

Famed Playwright Terrence McNally, who has been writing about gay issues for a good portion of his prolific career, wed his longtime boyfriend, Broadway producer and lawyer Tom Kirdahy, 46, in Washington D.C. yesterday, April 6, 2010 along the Potomac River. Washington D.C. just recently legalized same-sex marriage.

Prolific musical stage director David Galligan helms another S.T.A.G.E. benefit this year for one night only on Saturday, May 1 at the Luckman Theatre entitled Original Cast, featuring stars who originated their roles on Broadway or in LA. The Kennedy Center will end its run of Golden Age, a new play by Terrence McNally, on April 4th. Following its world premiere with the Philadelphia Theatre Company ran in the Kennedy Center Family Theater as part of Terrence McNally's Nights at the Opera, a five-week event featuring three of the playwright's works performed concurrently on three Kennedy Center stages.

This week, both in memory of the real-life Baby June, June Havoc, who passed away this week, as well as a precursory introduction to a multi-part series critiquing the entire canon of all major Sondheim cast albums available in anticipation of the late April opening of the new review SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM (currently in previews at Studio 54), we are taking a listen to the various cast recordings of the major productions on Broadway/West End of GYPSY over the last fifty years. GYPSY was, of course, one of the first scores on Broadway boasting lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and whether a leading lady the likes of Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters or Patti LuPone, it is a score unlike any other before or since and a true pinnacle of not only musical theatre, but all theatre, on Broadway and beyond. The crocuses, cherry blossoms, and azaleas will be in full bloom, as the nation's capital will be awash in beautiful colors. It's the perfect time to visit and see some great shows in our DC area theatres.
