Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE Hits Close to Home at Theatricum Botanicum

A parable of mass hysteria that draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch hunts of 1692 and McCarthyism, which gripped America in the 1950s, The Crucible by Arthur Miller remains eerily timely in today's climate of fake news. Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum, its own history firmly rooted in the McCarthy-era Hollywood blacklist - when actor Will Geer and his wife, Herta Ware, created the theater as a haven for blacklisted actors - opens a new production of Miller's modern classic onJune 30. Theatricum artistic director Ellen Geer, Will's daughter, is at the helm, with family members Thad Geer,Willow Geer and Melora Marshall featured in the cast.

Pacific Conservatory Theatre Will Present THE CRUCIBLE, Beginning February 15

Be afraid, be very afraid. In Miller's searing masterpiece, an invisible enemy unleashes a dangerous hysteria. As Artistic Director Mark Booher observed, From time to time, we human beings have periods of moral panic that overtakes us. The Crucible is one such timeless telling. While focused on literal witch hunts, it is also an allegory for any number of misguided crusades through the ages, including ominous opinions against select groups of people in our current state of the world.

Photo Coverage: First Look at SRO's THE CRUCIBLE

Arthur Miller's landmark play has gripped audiences for nearly 65 years, but couldn't be more timely in today's political environment. The McCarthy-era drama, set in Puritan Salem, paints a portrait of a paranoid, litigious society power-hungry and gripped by misguided moralism and predicts, among many things, the era of Donald Trump. The story focuses on a young farmer, his wife, and a young servant-girl who maliciously causes the wife's arrest for witchcraft The Crucible performs October 12th thru 22nd at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215. Casting Announced For THE CRUCIBLE at Gettysburg Community Theatre

Gettysburg Community Theatre, located at 49 York Street within the first block of Lincoln Square in historic downtown Gettysburg, will present Arthur Miller's The Crucible October 13-29, 2017. The Crucible is a gripping drama about the Salem witch trials. Religion, conspiracy, witchcraft, and lust fill the story as paranoia becomes strong enough to poison a whole town. Miller composed The Crucible as a dramatization of the Salem Witch Trials, with the witch trials standing in for the anti-Communist witch-hunts of the 1950s during the McCarthy era. As with the alleged witches of Salem, suspected Communists were encouraged to confess and identify other Communist sympathizers as means of escaping punishment. Many of those accused of Communism suffered loss of employment and/or destruction of their careers; some even suffered imprisonment. The corruption and deception Miller represented in The Crucible stands as a timely reminder to not always take everything at face value. Smear campaigning, or any type of intentional, premeditated effort to undermine an individual's or group's reputation, credibility, and character, has nearly become synonymous with modern-day politics. Like the accusations of witchcraft, smear campaigns focus on unverifiable rumors that are often distortions, half-truths, or even outright lies disseminated by gossip. Just as it was when written in the 1950's, The Crucible is still a timely parable of our contemporary and political society.
