FOOD FACTORY with Jon Hein to Debut 1/14 on Destination America

Dubble Bubble gum, Planters peanuts, Dannon yogurt, Campbell's soup, and SunChips. We crave them. Buy them. Open them, and eat them. But behind every one of these deceptively simple food products is a fascinating and intricate process involving grand machinery, a symphony of assembly lines, and a suite of weird and wonderful steps that carries each treat from the factory floor right into your kitchen. Destination America's new series FOOD FACTORY takes viewers behind the scenes to see how some of America's most beloved products are made. From iconic international brands to mom-and-pop products, each involves a process ripe with zigs, zags, swoops, and alleyoops as they travel down the production line. Along the way, marvel at the machinery - some mega, some miniscule - sophisticated manufacturing techniques, and revealing food science. Narrated by 'The Howard Stern Show' radio personality and Destination America veteran Jon Hein, FOOD FACTORY premieres on Monday, January 14 at 10 and 10:30 PM (E/P) on Destination America.

Department Stores Revenue Expected to Improve

The Department Stores industry has fought tough conditions in the five years to 2012, with revenue expected to decline at an average annual rate of 3.1% to $193.7 billion. Weak consumer confidence and low disposable income deterred households from making discretionary purchases during the recession, causing demand and sales to fall substantially for traditional department stores. Furthermore, in recent years, online retailers have emerged as a threat to industry players, stealing customers by offering convenience and low prices. "These poor conditions have caused profit to plummet," says IBISWorld industry analyst Eben Jose. "However, these same conditions have allowed discount department stores to thrive because their low prices catered to customers shopping on a budget." Recent improvements in economic conditions are expected to relieve some of the overall industry's struggles; revenue is estimated to grow a slight 1.2% in 2012.
