THE NEW HOPEVILLE COMICS Begins Previews 3/10 At ATA

Commander Squish Productions in association with Michael Roderick and Small Pond Entertainment, presents the Off-Broadway premiere of THE NEW HOPEVILLE COMICS beginning previews March 10 at American Theater of Actors. A hit at the 2002 New York International Fringe Festival, this new musical features music and lyrics by Nate Weida and a book co-written by Weida and Sarah Donnell. Jim Wren directs a cast that features an ensemble of 20 actors backed by a 5 piece rock band. Opening night is slated for Saturday, March 14.

THE NEW HOPEVILLE COMICS is set in an average US town called Hopeville. Here, your average superhero named Perfect Man protects its trusting and oblivious citizens against danger. His good deeds include grabbing a pair of scissors out of the hands of a running boy and rescuing the mayor's baby from falling out of a window. All is swell until Perfect Man's girlfriend rejects him. He loses his confidence and his power. Soon Perfect Man meets his demise in the form of a villainous trio (Sex, Drugs and Rockenroll) who have been gleefully waiting for their opportunity to turn the unsuspecting town to chaos. Can the citizens wise-up, band together to fight villainy and put the hope back into Hopeville?

EST/Sloan Project Presents First Light Festival 2009

First Light Festival 2009 is a presentation of new works commissioned by the EST/Sloan Project, an initiative designed to stimulate artists to create credible and compelling work exploring the worlds of science and technology and to challenge the existing stereotypes of scientists and engineers in the popular imagination. Now in its eleventh season, The Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Project (Graeme Gillis, Program Director) program has received proposals now numbering in the hundreds, and EST/Sloan has commissioned some two hundred projects for development with grants ranging from $500 to $10,000. Each season the EST/Sloan Project commissions and develops new works, and presents the results, at various stages from first readings to fully mounted productions, in the FIRST LIGHT Festival.

Bichir and Cochran to Star in Geffen's 'By the Waters of Babylon' by Schenkkan

The Los Angeles premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Schenkkan's By the Waters of Babylon brings two award-winning, long-time theater actors to the Geffen stage for the first time: Demián Bichir and Shannon Cochran. Bichir, who is currently starring as Mary Louise-Parker's love interest on Showtime's Weeds, will play the role of Arturo, a Cuban immigrant who is hired to (coincidentally) weed the garden of unconventional Austin widow Catherine. Cochran, who will star as Catherine, is straight from Chicago where she starred in sold out performances of The Lion in Winter at the Writers Theatre.

'The Angel Eaters Trilogy' to Begin Performances Nov. 3 at Flux Theatre

Flux Theatre Ensemble concludes its 2008 Season of Transformation with the world premiere of Johnna Adams' epic Angel Eaters Trilogy. The Trilogy follows three generations of a family cursed with the gift of raising people from the dead. The three plays of the Trilogy, Angel Eaters, Rattlers, and 8 Little Antichrists, will run in rep beginning November 3 at The Wings Theatre, 154 Christopher Street. The production will run through November 22. On Saturdays, intrepid audiences will be able to catch all three shows in chronological order.

American Conservatory Theater Casting for 'Wendy Play'

American Conservatory Theater conservatory director Melissa Smith and Young Conservatory director Craig Slaight announced casting today for the world premiere production of playwright Amy Herzog's The Wendy Play. Directed by A.C.T. associate artist Domenique Lozano, the production features actors from the graduating class of the Master of Fine Arts Program as well as from the Young Conservatory. The Wendy Play plays March 21 through April 5 at Zeum Theater, located at Yerba Buena Gardens (Fourth and Howard streets). Tickets are $15.50-$20.50 and are available by calling A.C.T. 'Lewis and Clark Reach the Euphrates' Begins 4/19 at ICT

Infamous Commonwealth Theatre (ICT) presents the final production of their 2007-2008 season dedicated to the topic Righteousness: Lewis and Clark Reach the Euphrates, written by Pulitzer Prize Winner Robert Schenkkan (The Kentucky Cycle) and directed by Chris Maher (Artistic Director, Open Eye Productions).

Jocelyn Sawyer to Helm Hancock's 'Still Lives'

Sp Theatre Productions is pleased to announce that Jocelyn Sawyer, former Playwrights Horizons' directing resident and Lincoln Center Director's Lab member will be taking over the helm of Still Lives, a new play written by Paul Hancock. Previously announced director Kareem Fahmy unexpectedly left the production after he received a Van Lier Directing Fellowship with Second Stage Theatre.

Clyman's 'Tranced' Opens Feb.1 at SJ Rep; Damashek Directs

Tranced, a politically charged, fast paced thriller, delves into the murky depths of international intrigue. Playwright Robert Clyman (Secret Order) invents an extraordinary mystery fueled by moral deliberation. Clyman pulls into question the very nature of truth and explores the powerful art of persuasion. Performances begin January 26 with performances through February 24.
