BWW Review: ABT's 'The Golden Cockerel' Is More of a Grandiose Theatrical Production Than a Ballet

ABT's Resident Choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, who created the version of 'The Golden Cockerel' that had its company premiere on June 6th 2016, is quoted in a Playbill article by Caroline Hamilton as saying, 'This production is overwhelmingly theatrical'. Ah, so that explains why there is virtually no dancing in the entire first act and very little in the second act! A little research reveals that Ratmansky reportedly added more dancing after getting less than laudatory reviews in 2012 when his 'Cockerel' opened in Copenhagen. Yet mime still predominates, which is the legacy of the unwieldy and heavy original costume designs by avant-garde artist Natalia Goncharova for the 1914 and 1937 Ballet Russes opera ballet productions of 'Le Coq d'Or' with choreography by Fokine. (In 1914, 'baby ballerina' Tamara Karsavina danced the role of the Queen of Shemakhan with Enrico Cecchetti as the Astrologer. The Cockerel was a stage prop.)

BWW Review: WORKING Reminds Us We Are More Than Our Jobs

WORKING is based on Studs Terkel's well-known book of interviews with U.S workers, which retells the accounts of men and women and presents the meaning that these jobs bring to their lives. This classic musical was first adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso and premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. The show later ran on Broadway briefly before entering the national regional theatre circuit. The show was updated in 2012 with two new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, and features the classic numbers from artists such as Stephen Schwartz, Craig Carnelia, and James Taylor. WORKING runs at Main Street Theatre from May 21 - June 19, 2016. The show, directed by the talented Andrew Ruthven, reflects not only the struggles that we go through as a nation, but hits home on multiple levels with the diverse and hard working citizens of Houston.

BWW Blog: Samantha Tirrell - BACKBEARD Finds Its Audience

Backbeard: A New Musical found its first audiences this past Wednesday, and we were tremendously busy leading up the first performance. Regardless of what time of day it was, a plethora of artists were working around the clock to see the visions of Backbeard's creators through to opening day. The final week before opening was an integral period of growth for artists, creators, designers, and technical staff. After weeks (or in Backbeard's case, years) of immersion in the text and the projected visions of artists, the final stretch presented the actualization of the piece, and the monstrous effort of a family of artists was realized.

BWW Review: IN A WORD

There may not be much under the Sun that we cannot claim to have seen in drama. Certainly the tragedy of losing a child has been thoroughly examined, if not exhausted; but it ultimately comes down to how you tell a story. Playwright Lauren Yee tells hers with precision and emotional impact, using nonlinear narrative and semantic legerdemain to make her characters and their circumstance feel new.

BWW Interview: Writer Jessica Tamara

Jessica Tamara is a rising author whose debut novel Running Away From Love was self-published and released on July 18, 2015. She has had a passion for writing and also reading since she was a little girl. She has been featured as a rising urban fiction author at the Toronto Urban Fiction Book Expo. Her goal is to create female characters from all walks of life that evolve, but most importantly they inspire and live in their truths whether it is good or bad. She would describe her writing style as emotional and vivid, where she wants you feel and escape into the moment she has created. You laugh with the characters, get angry with them, cry with them, and root for them to overcome. If the reader can relate and connect on any level, then that makes the writing process that much more worthwhile. Jessica currently resides in Buffalo, NY where works in finance and writes in her spare time. She is currently working on creating her own publishing company, which she hopes to help authors like herself to share their work with the world. She is currently working on her 2nd novel slated to be released in September 2016 titled 'Season's Change....Autumn Leaves'.
