Carner and Gregor have announced the winners of the BARELY LEGAL SHOWTUNE EXTRAVAGANZA V casting contest. Eight winners were selected from over 100 submissions received from college students around the country. Winners were selected by a four-person judging panel comprised of Casting Directors Michael Cassara and Jason Najjoum, Concert Director Marlo Hunter, and Concert Producer Alina Gutierrez. Carner and Gregor were not involved in the judging process. After four sold-out editions, Carner & Gregor's BARELY LEGAL SHOWTUNE EXTRAVAGANZA is back for its fifth year. Berkeley Repertory Theatre's Artistic Director Tony Taccone today announces the appointment of Liesl Tommy as the nonprofit's associate director. Tommy, who most recently directed Berkeley Rep's critically acclaimed production of Ruined, joins the Theatre's artistic team effective September 1. Tommy will fulfill various artistic duties including directing for Berkeley Rep's main stage; developing new work through The Ground Floor, the Center for the Creation and Development of New Work; and supporting ongoing artistic pursuits in the spirit of cultivating and producing innovative and adventurous work for the Theatre.
Producers of the Tony Award winning MATILDA THE MUSICAL announced today that Craig Bierko and Jill Paice will join the company as Miss Trunchbull and Miss Honey, respectively, on September 3. Bertie Carvel and Lauren Ward will play their final performances in those roles on September 1.
North Haven Arts and Enrichment will present the world premiere of RED EYE OF LOVE, a new musical comedy. The book and lyrics are by Arnold Weinstein and John Wulp. The music is by Sam Davis.
Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Executive Director Greg Reiner, announced today additional casting for its upcoming production of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet starring Elizabeth Olsen as Juliet. Academy Award winner William Hurt will play the role of Friar Laurence; Emmy Award nominee T.R. Knight has been cast as Mercutio and Tony Award nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega as the Nurse. CSC also announced that Finn Wittrock, previously announced to co-star as Romeo, has withdrawn from the production due to a film offer. A new Romeo and complete casting will be announced shortly. CSC's Romeo & Juliet, which begins performances Friday, September 27, will be directed by Tea Alagi? (Jackie). The official opening night is Wednesday, October 16. Romeo & Juliet will play a limited engagement through Sunday, November 3. Tickets will go on sale Thursday, September 5 at 12pm.

Summer musicals are no exception, and Galveston's Island East-End Theatre Company (ETC) is presenting Mel Brook's glitzy, splashy musical YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN to pad out this summer. Following the wild success of THE PRODUCERS, Mel Brooks reassembled his creative team and jumped back into the saddle of creating theatrical musicals. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN had it's pre-Broadway try-out in Seattle in 2007, ran on Broadway from November 8, 2007 through January 4, 2009, and has had enjoyed two successful national tours across the United States.
Sundance Institute and the LUMA Foundation previously announced that the two organizations would collaborate to host The Sundance Institute | LUMA Foundation Theatre Directors Retreat at Domaine de l'Armelliere, today, July 29 - August 9, in Arles, France. Under the supervision of Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of The Sundance Institute Theatre Program, Producing Director Christopher Hibma and Program Associate Anne Kauffman, the Retreat will be the first theatre director-centered residency at the Institute.

According to an audition announcement on Backstage, Broadway's Big Fish is looking for a new actress to play 'The Witch'. The role, which is a featured part in the chorus/ensemble that requires a 'powerful voice', was played by Katie Thompson (The Public Theater's GIANT) to positive reviews in the production's pre-Broadway run in Chicago.
