Musical Theatre West is proud to announce that it will open its 59th Season with the mega-hit HAIRSPRAY at the beautiful 1,070-seat Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. HAIRSPRAY previews October 28 and runs for fourteen performances through November 13, 2011

HAIRSPRAY, the most anticipated musical theatre event of the summer, comes to the stage of the Moonlight Amphitheatre as part of Moonlight Stage Productions' 31st Summer Season. HAIRSPRAY is the Broadway musical phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture and captured eight Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2003. Now, for the first time at Moonlight, audiences will be swept away to 1960s Baltimore in this smash-hit musical that's piled bouffant-high with comedy and music. The brand new musical SUMMER OF LOVE recently had its world premiere at Musical Theatre West and continues through April 17 at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Long Beach, CA. This original production will be directed by the show's creator and writer, Roger Bean (The Marvelous Wonderettes, Life Could Be A Dream) with choreography by Lee Martino and musical direction by Michael Borth and Michael Paternostro. This production is included in the 2011 FESTIVAL OF NEW AMERICAN MUSICALS.

The 2011 Garland Award recipients were announced today, honoring the best of Los Angeles theatre. Under the voting system each Garland winner was named on at least three critics' 'Best of 2010' lists. Each critic listed up to five nominees for each category except performance, up to 10 nominees for performance in musical productions and 10 for straight plays. Here are the critics' lists, minus the winners. The critics who voted are Jeff Favre, Hoyt Hilsman, Travis Holder, Eric Marchese, Dany Margolies, Dink O'Neal, Melinda Schupmann, Madeleine Shaner, Les Spindle, Neal Weaver, and Jennie Webb. Following six weeks of fierce competition among 20 of California's finest young musical theatre performers, LA's Next Great Stage Star 2011 celebrated Judy Mora's outstanding victory at the 5th annual competition's glittering Finale on Sunday, February 6, presented by Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's, the most critically acclaimed, award-winning supper club of its kind in greater Los Angeles. Runners up included San Francisco's Michael David (2nd place); Matthew McFarland (3rd place); Emily Goglia (4th place); and Reba Buhr (5th place). Broadway World's Dean Butler was there to capture the three and a half hour event ... off and on stage - which also included a Special Guest Star performance by musical theatre, television star and pop composer/singer Blake McIver Ewing.
