The Theatre Museum awarded its 2014 Theatre Museum Awards for Excellence at the Players Club, on Tuesday May 27, 2014. The Hershey Community Chorus' spring concert, 'An Evening of Broadway', will be held Friday, May 2, 2014, at 7:30 pm at The Hershey Evangelical Free Church, 330 Hilltop Road, Hummelstown. This concert is a collection of memorable Broadway favorites from the past and present and will showcase soloists and chorus accompanied by local musicians Steve Smith on piano, Mike Yinger on bass, and Tim Rupert on percussion. Special guest soloist for this concert will be Owen Richards, a student in the fifth grade at Derry Township School District and a member of the Hershey Elementary School Chorus.

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts concludes the 2013-14 season of its Early Music series with The Tallis Scholars, with Peter Phillips as director, performing 40 Years of Renaissance Polyphony. The Anniversary program includes a world premiere by Michael Nyman, commissioned by Miller Theatre. The performance is tonight, April 5, 2014, 8:00 PM, Presented by Miller Theatre at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin (145 W. 46th Street). Tickets are $40 - $50 (limited availability), CU Students: $7, and all other students: $24 with valid ID
OPERA America Announces Recipients of 'Opera Grants for Female Composers'

OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, is pleased to announce the first round of recipients of its new program: Opera Grants for Female Composers, made possible through the generosity of The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. From among the 112 eligible applicants, an independent adjudication panel selected eight composers. The recipients have each been awarded $12,500 to support the development of their compositions listed below.

The Riverside Opera Company, under the direction of Maestro Alan Aurelia announces a performance of 'PoPera' a mix of Opera and Broadway favorites featuring long time Riverside Opera piano accompanist Ming Kwong and sopranos Jessica Sandidge and Manna Knjoi who are winners of open public auditions, held in New York City by the Riverside Opera Company. They will sing selections of their choosing. Whatever else you think of Richard Strauss, you can't accuse him of picking easy subjects. While Die Frau Ohne Schattenremains one of the most elusive of opera plots, Elektra among the most bloodthirsty and Salome among the most disturbing, it is the rarely-heard one-act Feuersnot that proved a step too far to Strauss's own audiences. But then what did he expect? The plot revolves around lust and sex – and the fact that it has always been regarded as possibly semi-autobiographical no doubt didn't help his cause. Yet the opera is fascinating enough that the world premiere was conducted by Gustav Mahler.

City Theater Company's landmark 2013-2014 season continues with the epic Gypsy. Hailed by critics as the great American musical-with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents-the show is based on the memoirs of legendary stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. The classically structured play focuses on the ultimate stage mom, Mama Rose, and her obsessive drive to make her two daughters into stars at any cost.
