Now in Print & eBook: Silicon Valley Suspense Novel “Learning Curve” by Michael S. Malone
by Robert Diamond
- Jul 27, 2013
Barking Rain Press, a non-profit US fiction publisher, announced the print and eBook release of the high-tech suspense novel 'Learning Curve: A Novel of Silicon Valley,' from legendary Silicon Valley journalist, author, and entrepreneur Michael S. Malone. Malone is the author of twenty non-fiction books, including such award-winning bestsellers as 'The Virtual Corporation,'Bill and Dave,' and 'The Future Arrived Yesterday.' He has been the host of four PBS series, and producer/writer of the Emmy-nominated PBS miniseries 'The New Heroes.' He was a founding shareholder of eBay, Siebel Systems and Qik, and is currently co-founder and vice-chairman of new medical software start-up PatientKey Inc.
'Learning Curve' tells the story of two Silicon Valley executives, one a veteran CEO of an established corporation, the other a young founder of a hot new startup, as they battle for industry dominance-all while dealing with both external threats and the manipulations of people close to them. Nothing is as it seems in this high-stakes game of cat and mouse.
Author Michael S. Malone has enjoyed a fabled Silicon Valley career. He grew up in Mt. View and Sunnyvale, where his schoolmates and neighbors included Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. David Packard wrote his grad school recommendation letter. He joined the San Jose Mercury-News as the world's first daily high tech reporter, covered the rise of Apple Computer and the personal computer industry, as was twice nominated by the paper for the Pulitzer Prize for his groundbreaking investigations into toxic chemical leaks and espionage in the Valley.
Malone then became one of the very first technology freelancers, syndicating his reporting electronically to the 'New York Times' (where he became a columnist), the 'Boston Globe,' and 'The Economist' (for whom he covered the Macintosh introduction), among other publications. In subsequent years, as a contributing editor, Malone helped with the creation of 'Upside,' 'Fast Company,' and 'Forbes ASAP' (he was editor of the last during its National Magazine Award-nominated, dot.com era). He was a columnist for ABCNews for nearly a decade and currently is a regular contributor of editorials for the 'Wall Street Journal.'
Malone says that he has put all of these experiences into 'Learning Curve.' 'I got tired of writers parachuting into Silicon Valley and thinking they could capture the spirit of the place by only hanging out in San Francisco with the social networking kids or in Palo Alto with the Facebook crowd. They are important, but they are only a small fraction of the story. I wanted to show the real world of tech-complete with an ending as unpredictable, and yet as inevitable, as real-life Valley competition. I think when Silicon Valley-ites read this novel, they will recognize all of the characters, including themselves. Readers elsewhere will appreciate that these characters actually think, act and talk like the famous figures they read about.'
Ask for 'Learning Curve' at your favorite bookstore, or buy it online at the Barking Rain Press website, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Powells, and many other booksellers. It is also available in most eBook formats through Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, iTunes, Kobo, Overdrive, the Sony Reader Store, and many other outlets worldwide. Interested readers can preview the first four chapters of 'Learning Curve' for free at the Barking Rain Press website, barkingrainpress.org.

Soundview to Publish Summary of 'Finding the Next Steve Jobs'
by Christina Mancuso
- Jul 26, 2013
Nolan Bushnell founded the groundbreaking gaming company Atari in 1972, and two years later employed Steve Jobs, as well as many other creatives over the course of his five decades in business. Here Bushnell explains how to find, hire, and nurture the people who could turn your company into the next Atari or the next Apple. Bushnell's advice is constantly counter-intuitive, surprising, and atypical. When looking for employees, ignore credentials. Hire the obnoxious (in limited numbers). Demand a list of favorite books. Ask unanswerable questions, and much more. Learn more at http://www.summary.com/book-summaries/_/Finding-the-Next-Steve-Jobs.
Nolan Bushnell (born February 5, 1943) is the founder of Atari, Inc. (now owned by Infogrames) and the Chuck E. Cheese Pizza-Time Theaters and is considered to be the father of the video arcade industry. Bushnell graduated from the University of Utah electrical engineering program in 1968. During his time there in the 1960s, Bushnell was one of many computer science students that played the now famous Spacewar game on DEC mainframe computers. In 1971, Bushnell and colleague Ted Dabney created the Spacewar clone 'Computer Space' in a self-contained cabinet; it was manufactured and distributed by Nutting Associates. Computer Space proved to be too far ahead of its time and was a commercial failure.
In 1974, Bushnell and Atari decided to develop a home version of Pong. By 1975, Pong became one of the hottest Christmas gifts, largely due to a distribution agreement with Sears. In 1977, the Atari 2600 was introduced which helped to revolutionize home videogaming and the modern video game console industry was born. Demand for the unit was so great that Atari executives manned the production lines to help with the assembly and packaging during that first Christmas after its release. In 1976, Warner Communications (now Time Warner) bought Atari, and Bushnell was forced out of the company in 1978.
Bushnell has started over 20 companies (his most recent being uWink), which he founded in 1999). He has been inducted into the 'Video Game Hall of Fame' and the Consumer Electronics Association 'Hall of Fame.'
A graduate of Stanford and Harvard, Gene Stone is a former Peace Corps volunteer, screenwriter, television producer, and journalist as well as a book, magazine, and newspaper editor. He has also ghostwritten more than thirty books (many of which were national bestsellers), specializing in socially conscious business and health - among his bestselling health related books are 'UltraPrevention' (with Drs. Mark Hyman and Mark Liponis) and 'The Engine 2 Diet' (with vegan firefighter Rip Esselstyn). He has just 'The Secrets of People Who Never Get Sick,' which has already been translated into a dozen languages.
