Wednesday night was the second of Marilyn Maye's first 54 Below run (which will continue until March 16) and she sashayed around the stage in front of an almost full house like a woman of 35. Like most of her shows, Maye's performance was a 'live' cabaret Master Class for budding cabaret performers and seasoned professionals alike, and this 'Maye-den Voyage' never went adrift (thanks in part to solid and unobtrusive support from Tedd Frith on piano, Tom Hubbard on bass, and Jim Eklof on drums).
Whether he's playing a Westchester housewife who's preparing her cabaret tribute to Edith Piaf, Cinderella's much maligned stepmother in the style of Mildred Pierce, or the tough but warm-hearted owner of a speakeasy, performance legend Charles Busch continues to delight and redefine his craft as a master humorist, illusionist, and camp icon. The author of dozens of hit plays (Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Red Scare on Sunset, Flipping My Wig, Times Square Angel, Our Leading Lady, The Third Story, Die! Mommie! Die!, Psycho Beach Party, The Divine Sister, and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom to name but a few), Busch makes his 54 Below debut for two very special year end performances, joined by Musical Director Tom Judson. If the Broadway revival of a few years back demonstrated the deadly results that can occur when overthinking and underplaying a quality farce, the new Paper Mill mounting is a fast a furious example of Ken Ludwig's madcap Lend Me A Tenor done right. Director Don Stephenson doesn't throw any fancy curveballs with the material, but he and his perfectly cast company of Broadway vets nail every door slam and verbal ping-pong volley with hilarious aplomb.
Nicolas King has been performing since age 4. He was seen first on Broadway in Beauty & The Beast, then in A Thousand Clowns opposite Tom Selleck, and in Hollywood Arms directed by Hal Prince, all before the age of 13.
