NYU Skirball Center Welcomes Hangzhou Yue Opera Company Tonight, Tomorrow

The all-female ensemble Hangzhou Yue Opera Company transforms two classic Ibsen plays into lyrical adventures with Hedda tonight, February 25 and tomorrow, Wednesday, The Lady from the Sea (February 26) at the second annual Visions + Voices Global Performance Series at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. This year's Visions + Voices will focus on China and will run from February 20-May 12, 2014.

Boston Conservatory to Celebrate Sondheim at Annual Gala & Auction, 3/9

The Boston Conservatory will hold its annual gala and auction Sunday, March 9, 2014. An Evening Celebrating Sondheim will include a special, one-night-only production of some of Stephen Sondheim's greatest hits, a lively cocktail reception and a silent auction. All proceeds raised during the event will go toward scholarship assistance for the Conservatory's talented students.

Today in 1973, A Little Night Music opened at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran for 601 performances. A Little Night Music is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, it involves the romantic lives of several couples. Since its original 1973 Broadway production, the musical has enjoyed professional productions in the West End, by opera companies, in a 2009 Broadway revival, and elsewhere, and it is a popular choice for regional groups. It was adapted for film in 1977, with Harold Prince directing and Elizabeth Taylor, Len Cariou, Lesley-Anne Down and Diana Rigg starring.

Children will be entertained in grand style this February with two events at The Ridgefield Playhouse. Pinocchio will be presented today, February 22, at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. On Friday, February 28, and Saturday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m., Into The Woods, the iconic musical of Stephen Sondheim, will be presented by The Connecticut Broadway Stage Co. with a cast of 10th to 12th graders. These shows are part of the Pepsi Children's Series. To make the day even more special, Piccolo Pizza & Pasta Jazzeria (24 Prospect St., Ridgefield) will serve a free scoop of gelato the day of the shows when tickets/stubs are presented.

Today in 2008, the first Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George opened at Studio 54, where it ran for 149 performances. Sunday in the Park with George is a 1983 musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical was inspired by the painting 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte' by Georges Seurat. The musical won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony Awards for design (and a nomination for Best Musical), numerous Drama Desk Awards, the 1991 Olivier Award for Best Musical and the 2007 Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production.
