The Joyce Theater Foundation is pleased to announce that choreographer Makiko Tamura (small apple co.) is the winner of The A.W.A.R.D Show! 2009: New York City. Tamura, who competed in a four day event with eleven other participants, received a $10,000 cash award to use toward the creation of a new dance work. Two runners-up, Monica Bill Barnes (Monica Bill Barnes & Company) and Shannon Gillen & Elisabeth Motley (DOORKNOB COMPANY) were each awarded $1,000.

The production is about an assimilated Jewish family in 1958, suburban Connecticut whose lives are turned upside down when the father is passed over for a promotion because of their Judaism.

Set in Buffalo, New York, Over the Tavern takes us back to the Eisenhower era of the 1950's and introduces us to the Pazinski family (Mom, Dad and their four children: Eddie, Annie, Georgie and the hero of the tale, 12-year-old Rudy) who live over the bar they own.

Playwright/director Mitchell Polin re-mixes Wilder's classic ideas with literary, theatrical, musical and visual arts innovations to create a wholly original theater experience. Planet Connections Theater Festivity will premiere in June 2009 as a new festival designed to promote awareness in the theatrical community about social and cultural issues. Formed by two Spotlight On Festival alums, Glory Bowen and Frank Calo, the festival will explore using theater as a tool for social change while connecting artists with new audiences in fun theatrical environment.
