Glass, Anderson, Reed, and More Join Tuli Kupferberg Benefit, 1/22

Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, and Lou Reed will join a host of others in the January 22nd concert to benefit Tuli Kupferberg. Kupferberg is an American singer songwriter and found of the band The Fugs who suffered a series of strokes in April and September 2009, leaving him blind and in need of full time nursing care. The concert will take place at St. Ann's Warehouse, Friday, January 22 at 7:30 P.M.

Columbia University School of the Arts, Theatre Arts Program Presents BLACK SNOW, 2/3-2/6

Columbia Stages presents Black Snow by Mikhail Bulgakov, directed byMikhael Tara Garver and produced in association with The New Ensemble. On astormy night, Sergei sits alone with his first great novel in a small room inMoscow. A knock at the door propels him down the rabbit hole into an adventureof ridiculous proportions. This world premiere event melds together thehilarious and stunning adaptation by Keith Reddin with an epic original scoreby Andrew Gerle and Royce Vavrek. From the thunderous sound of the keys, thetrue music of a man's voice battles with your expectations. Performances for 'Black Snow' will be held February 3-6.

Cabell, Patinkin, Turner Set For Yale Rep's COMPULSION 1/29-2/28

YALE REPERTORY THEATRE (James Bundy, Artistic Director; Victoria Nolan, Managing Director) presents the world premiere of COMPULSION by Rinne Groff, directed by Oskar Eustis, at Yale Repertory Theatre (1120 Chapel Street, New Haven) January 29-February 28. Opening Night is Thursday, February 4.

Soho Rep Announces 2009-10 Season; Kicks Off With Young Jean Lee's LEAR 1/7/2010-1/31/2010

Off-Broadway's eleven-time Obie Award-winning Soho Rep (46 Walker Street) will present a diverse array of contemporary theater artists, beginning with Young Jean Lee's LEAR (January 7 - January 31, 2010); followed by Gregory Moss' ORANGE, HAT & GRACE (March 11 - April 4, 2010) directed by Soho Rep Artistic Director Sarah Benson; and concluding with Cynthia Hopkins' THE TRUTH: A TRAGEDY (May 6 - May 30); and will implement a new humanities programming initiative - FEED - for all main stage productions during the company's 2009-10 season, it has been announced by Soho Rep Artistic Director Sarah Benson.

Elevator Repair Service's GATZ Gets Go-Ahead from Fitzgerald Executors

GATZ, the upcoming staged reading of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, has been given the go-ahead by Fitzgerald's executors. The estate had previously blocked performances of GATZ, as the rights were held by the producers of the novel. Several companies have expressed interest in producing GATZ, including St. Ann's Warehouse, the Public Theatre, and the New York Theatre Workshop.

Theatre For The New City Presents Voice 4 Vision Puppet Festival Dec. 3-13

The Fifth Voice 4 Vision Puppet Festival (www.voice4vision.org) will be presented December 3 to 13, 2009 by Theater for the New City to celebrate the work of a unique group of New York artists who have been creating dynamic puppet theater for many years. Theater for the New City is dedicated to presenting cross-disciplinary theatrical works and to developing audiences that support local New York artists; this festival is wonderfully suited to that mission. Puppet theater artists Jane Catherine Shaw and Sarah Provost are co-curators. This festival is generously supported by the Jim Henson Foundation.

Playwright Enda Walsh of THE NEW ELECTRIC BALLROOM Discusses How "Words Can Get in the Way"

Playwright Enda Walsh, author of THE NEW ELECTRIC BALLROOM and THE WALWORTH FARCE, feels that, as contradictory as it may seem, words have a habit of getting in the way. Walsh says that, although in theatre words are obviously of the utmost importance, ideas can be communicated through the actors feelings and actions. Walsh believes that 'theater can be much more than just people talking.'

Enda Walsh's THE NEW ELECTRIC BALLROOM Plays St. Ann's Warehouse, Now Thru 11/22

Enda Walsh, playwright of the critically acclaimed The Walworth Farce, premiered his new play, The New Electric Ballroom at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn last night to a full house. The play premiered at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, winning the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe First Award. The production is brought to St. Ann's by the Irish theatre company Druid Ireland and is directed by Edna Walsh. It runs at St. Ann's Warehouse through November 22nd.

BAM Presents DJ Spooky's Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica During 2009 Next Wave Festival

Based around field recordings made in Antarctica by DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid/Paul D. Miller exploring the acoustic qualities of ice, Terra Nova transforms the artist's first person encounter with the continent's harsh, dynamic landscape into a large scale multimedia performance work that employs video projections, sampling, and a scored symphony performed live by members of the acclaimed New York and Chicago-based International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).
