This is when Sheena Jansen and Max Wojtanowicz gather a few of their friends, who just happen to be among the most talented musical theater artists in town, for a little cabaret show. They've been doing it for over two years now, and it just keeps getting better and better. Each month has a theme, and this being February, the theme for this month's show was love. It was a fabulously entertaining night of musical theater, and it also served as a preview for shows to come this spring and summer. Read on for highlights and to find out where you can see the cast on stages around town.
Alright, so unlike most humans who are currently in their mid-twenties, I grew up listening to the tunes of artists like Bing Crosby (not just at Christmastime), Judy Garland, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters… I could go on forever. I listened to it because my dad listened to it because his dad listened to it. It's in my blood, I can't help it. Besides, have you ever given 40s music a really good listen? If you have, you'll know that there never were smoother voices in this history of forever. Silky smooth, buttery voices. People just don't sing like that anymore! Not to mention full orchestras backed the singers. Full orchestras! We're talking piano, drums, trumpets, trombones, bass (the upright kind), saxophone… I mean these guys really knew how to rock!

To borrow an analogy from Robyn Spangler, the Los Angeles-based singer (now spending more time in New York) who brought her show “Riddle, Ronstadt and Me” to the Metropolitan Room on Monday, January 12, a dress may be fine off the rack, but when tailored specifically for a particular body, it can uniquely highlight the physical assets of the woman wearing it. Likewise, the artistry of the musical arrangement comes when it wraps a familiar song around an individual's voice and style ands allow the song to be heard in a fresh, and hopefully, wonderful way.
