September 22, 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the beloved Broadway musical Fiddler On The Roof - music and lyrics by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, book by Joseph Stein, produced by Harold Prince and directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. To celebrate the classic show, THEATER TALK welcomes critic and dramaturg Alisa Solomon of the Columbia University Journalism School to discuss her new book, Wonder of Wonders: A Cultural History of Fiddler on the Roof.
Jim Brochu Returns to Barrington Stage in CHARACTER MAN, Beginning Tonight

Barrington Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and Managing Director Tristan Wilson, welcomes the return of Drama Desk Award-winner Jim Brochu in his new show Character Man, following his wildly successful run of Zero Hour in 2011. A musical valentine celebrating the Golden Age of the American Musical, Character Man will be presented at BSC's St. Germain Stage at the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center from tonight, September 18 through 28. The press opening is Saturday, September 20 at 7:30pm.

Queens Theatre will present the Tony-nominated play Say Goodnight Gracie, starring Alan Safier as George Burns, written by Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) and directed by Michael White. The show will be at Queens Theatre (14 United Nations Avenue South, Flushing Meadows Corona Park) on Saturday, September 27 at 2pm & 8pm and on Sunday, September 28 at 3pm. It's just a fact that Stages St. Louis is a very special theatre company that always brings a sense of joy and enthusiasm to the shows they stage year end and year out. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, their current production (book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and music by Jerry Beck), is another terrific example of their expertise in these endeavors. Lovingly crafted and performed with equal parts gusto and tenderness, this is a presentation that perfectly illustrates the art of musical theatre, while also touching the heart and soul of those who view it.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Broadway production this fall, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater mounts a new staging of Fiddler on the Roof, the iconic musical that has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. Helmed by Artistic Director Molly Smith, the production features choreography by Arena favorite Parker Esse, who adapts the original Jerome Robbins choreography for an in-the-round staging, and a 10-piece orchestra led by Musical Director Paul Sportelli (Arena's My Fair Lady, Light in the Piazza).

Long Beach Playhouse Extends 'FIDDLER' Through 8/23

Due to sell-out crowds, the Long Beach Playhouse is extending its production of Fiddler on the Roof for one additional weekend: August 22 and 23. 'The production has received outstanding reviews and audience response has been overwhelming,' said Andrew Vonderschmitt. 'The shows have sold out and this give people who want to see it but couldn't get tickets another chance.'
