Goodman Theatre Announces Latino-Focused 2013 New Stages Festival, 12/7-22

Now in its 10th year, Goodman Theatre's 2013 New Stages festival features five FREE new plays-two fully staged workshop productions performed in repertory plus three staged readings-in the Owen Theatre, December 7 - 22. All five plays celebrate Latino playwrights: The Upstairs Concierge, a contemporary farce about celebrity and baseball by Pulitzer Prize finalist (for The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity) Kristoffer Diaz; and The Solid Sand Below, an examination of the intoxicating nature of war which Martin Zimmerman developed during his time as a member of the Goodman's Playwrights Unit, and which was selected for the 2013 National Playwrights Conference at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut. The three staged readings, which complement the two workshop productions over the December 13 - 15 "Industry Weekend," are TBA. THE LIFE AND DEATH OF MADAM BARKER and More Set for Red Tape Theatre's 10th Season

Red Tape Theatre (RTT) announces their 2013/14 Season, which marks their 10th Anniversary Season and first season under the direction of new Artistic Director, Brandon Ray. The season opens October 14th, 2013 with the world premiere of The Life and Death of Madam Barker by Brooke Allen, with music and lyrics by John Fournier and directed by Eric Hoff. Then, in January of 2014 RTT will present the US premiere of hamlet is dead. no gravity by Ewald Palmetshofer, translated by Neil Blackadder and directed by Seth Bockley. Concluding the season in May of 2014, RTT will present another US Premiere, Earthquakes in London, by Mike Bartlett and directed by Brandon Ray. Red Tape Theatre's 10th Season will be presented at its home in St. Peter's Episcopal Church, located at 621 W Belmont Ave.

La Piara's GUERRA: A CLOWN PLAY Comes to Links Hall, Now thru 8/4

Mexico City-based company La Piara in collaboration with Chicago writers/directors Seth Bockley and Devon de Mayo (who previously co-wrote and co-directed As Told by the Vivian Girls for Dog & Pony Theatre Company as part of Steppenwolf's Garage Rep) returns to Chicago with its satirical physical comedy Guerra: A Clown Play at Links Hall, 3111 N. Western Ave., for seven performances, today, July 26-Aug. 4. The piece was previously performed in Chicago at Millennium Park in March 2012.

Theatre Seven to Present World Premiere of UNWILLING AND HOSTILE INSTRUMENTS, 10/1-27

Theatre Seven of Chicago brings together nine talented Chicago's playwrights to commemorate the 100th anniversary of suffrage in Illinois with the world premiere of UNWILLING AND HOSTILE INSTRUMENTS: 100 Years of Extraordinary Chicago Women. Woven together into one full-length work are the incredible stories of Jane Addams, Myra Bradwell, Ann Landers, Mavis Staples, Cora Strayer, Maurine Watkins and Ida B. Wells. UNWILLING AND HOSTILE INSTRUMENTS plays October 1 - October 27, 2013 at American Theater Company, 1909 W. Byron St. in Chicago. Tickets are available at www.theatreseven.org.

The Tank Presents La Piara's GUERRA: A CLOWN PLAY, Now thru 7/20

Guerra: a clown play is a satirical physical comedy created by Mexico City-based company La Piara in collaboration with writers/directors Seth Bockley (February House at The Public Theatre) and Devon de Mayo (The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler with Dog & Pony Theatre Company). Performed in three languages, Guerracombines slapstick, clown, dance, bouffant and farce to tell the story of a military outpost desperate for recruits, and the cannon fodder that a hapless General sends to war. This contemporary story of war's inhumanity is given a darkly humorous edge through the medium of clown.

League of Chicago Theatres' STOREFRONT PLAYWRIGHT PROJECT Set for Now thru 7/27

Following the success of last year's inaugural Storefront Playwright Project, the League of Chicago Theatres will again provide support and windowspace at Expo 72 for nearly 40 emerging and established playwrights to work on a current writing project in view of the public in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. From a large screen in a window facing the sidewalk, the public will be able to read what the playwright is writing and watch the creation of the next great Chicago play in real time. The Storefront Playwright Project will take place at Expo72, 72 E. Randolph St., in downtown Chicago, today, July 2 - 27, 2013, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sideshow Theatre Stages THE BURDEN OF NOT HAVING A TAIL, Now thru 8/4

Sideshow Theatre Company concludes its 2012/13 season with the world premiere of THE BURDEN OF NOT HAVING A TAIL, by Carrie Barrett, directed by ensemble member Megan A. Smith, playing tonight, June 29 - August 4, 2013 at Chicago Dramatists, 1105 W. Chicago Ave., Chicago. This darkly comical, one-woman tour-de-force features ensemble member Karie Miller in an interactive experience with the audience. Tickets are available at www.sideshowtheatre.org. The press performance is Tuesday, July 2 at 8 pm.

Victory Gardens Hosts 2013 Chicago One-Minute Play Festival Today

Victory Gardens and the One-Minute Play Festival (OMPF) present the Third Annual Chicago One-Minute Play Festival, an evening of micro-plays by sixty of Chicago's top playwrights, directed by ten Chicago directors. OMPF benefits the Miller Match campaign and will be presented for two performances only, today, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue in Lincoln Park.

Chicago's Lady Arm Wrestlers Return for CLLAW 16, 6/7

The ladies of CLLAW are celebrating their 'Sweet 16' - but there's nothing sweet about these gals! The Chicago League of Lady Arm Wrestlers are flexing their forearms once again at CLLAW XVI on Friday, June 7 at 10 pm with a return to the super colossal Logan Square Auditorium, 2539 N. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago. Brought to you by Sideshow Theatre Company, CLLAW's 16th match will feature fearsome lady arm wrestlers decked out in over-the-top outfits, a cash bar, shady referees and audience participation all wrapped into one wild, crazy, theatrical event. Chicago bands The Black Laces and The Lucky Shiners will take the stage to rock out the evening. All proceeds from CLLAW XVI will benefit Sideshow Theatre and this match's partner charity, C4 - Community Counseling Centers of Chicago.

The Public's OLD-FASHIONED PROSTITUTES Begins 4/30

The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) will begin previews for the world premiere of OLD-FASHIONED PROSTITUTES (A TRUE ROMANCE) on Tuesday, April 30. Written, directed, and designed by Richard Foreman, who has been working with The Public Theater for more than 36 years, OLD-FASHIONED PROSTITUTES (A TRUE ROMANCE) and runs through Sunday, June 2, in The Public's Martinson Theater, with an official press opening on Tuesday, May 7.
