Jazz trumpet virtuoso Ambrose Akinmusire joins his "unfurling lines that confound expectation" (Chicago Tribune) with rapper Kool A.D.'s "social consciousness infused irreverence" (Colorlines) to create a brand new chamber music work co-commissioned by Liquid Music and the Ecstatic Music Festival. Guided by Akinmusire's "strong aesthetic compass" (The New York Times), this uniquely explorative and expressive world premiere collaboration will feature the "fearless, precise and forward-looking" (The Chicago Reader) Mivos Quartet alongside pianist Sam Harris and drummer Marcus Gilmore.

There are undoubtedly other productions worthy of merit in 2016 which I did not cover. This list is based only on what I saw and reviewed. (alphabetical listings; Equity, Equity-waiver & Non-Equity productions are mixed) (artists performing outside LA may be included in performance categories) No set, costume, technical awards. I leave that to the bigger awards and to the expertise of those who really know those fields inside out.

Eric Krop, known for his performances in Godspell on Broadway and the movie musical, Grind, debuts his solo show of power ballads, contemporary Pop songs, original music, and classic hits at Martinis Above Fourth on Thursday, January 12. Music & Lyrics and West Yorkshire Playhouse have announced that Charlotte Wakefield in the role of Truly Scrumptious and Jos Vantyler in the role of the Childcatcher in the much-loved Sherman Brothers musical CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG.
