AOP (American Opera Projects), and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture will co-present an evening of scenes from Nkeiru Okoye's folk opera Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom that tells of how a young girl born in slavery, becomes Harriet Tubman, the legendary Underground Railroad conductor. The musical excerpts will be followed by an artist Q&A moderated by WQXR's Terrance McKnight. In all, the performance will feature 252 vocalists and 35 orchestra members.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman announced today that Sarasota Opera is one of 832 non-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. Sarasota Opera is recommended for a $30,000 grant to support to support performances of Carlisle Floyd's opera Of Mice and Men, as part of the third year of the 'American Classics Series,' accompanied by significant educational programming.

OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, has announced that it has awarded nearly $200,000 in Audience Development grants, as part of The Opera Fund, to 16 U.S. opera companies.
