VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert enters the new year with Kurt Weill's STREET SCENE, an unblinking look at tenement life in New York City circa 1946, based on Elmer Rice's play of the same name, with lyrics by Langston Hughes. This production marks the Canadian Premiere of Weill's landmark American Opera and continues the company's exploration of operatic social comment in the 20th Century, begun so memorably in November with de Falla's LA VIDA BREVE starring Isabel Bayrakdarian.
VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert enters a new decade and to mark this milestone, the company presents a season of operas that explore the modern age from a 20th Century perspective. The celebration of commemorative anniversaries for three great composers was the theme for VOICEBOX/Opera in Concert's own 40th Anniversary and the season closes with Verdi's STIFFELIO on Sunday, March 23, 2014 with a single performance at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts at 2:30 pm. This inflammatory work from 1850 concerns an adultery in the house of a Protestant minister and was so severely censored by the Italian authorities that Verdi withdrew it in 1856 and it was only intermittently revived – in various forms – in the 20th century. In 1992, scholars were given access to Verdi's autograph score by the Carrara family and the original version was produced at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on 21 October 1993. It is this version that VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert will be presenting.
Jean-Philippe Rameau revolutionized the French operatic tradition and HIPPOLYTE ET ARICIE is his crowning achievement. The stellar cast includes Allyson McHardy, Meredith Hall, Colin Ainsworth and Alain Coulombe.
