Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit began preview performances on Thursday, February 26, 2009 and opened on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at the Shubert Theatre (West 44th Street). We were there to capture all the starry arrivals at opening night!

Philadelphia Theatre Company will present the world premiere of Terrence McNally's newest play The Golden Age as part of its 2009-2010 season. Following its run in Philadelphia, the PTC production will move to the Kennedy Center as part of its 'Terrence McNally's Nights at the Opera' Festival.

Richard Thomas, co-creator of Jerry Springer the Opera, is set to direct a new opera based on the tragic life of blond bombshell and train-wreck Anna Nicole Smith. The story will be written by Mark-Anthony Turnage and staged at Covant Garden in 2011. The tale is bound to be a dramatic one as Smith's life was filled with a plethora of tabloid worthy controversy. While working as a stripper Smith met and married elderly billionaire J. Howard Marshall. After Marshall's death Smith was caught up in a very public battle with her husband's son over money. She briefly starred in her own reality TV show during which her weight ballooned. She appeared publicly intoxicated numerous times and succumbed to several embarrassing public appearances. Tragedy encompassed the later years of her life, as three days after the birth of her daughter in the Bahamas Smith's son was found dead. Five months later Smith also passed away.

Hedda Gabler, by Henrik Ibsen with a new adaptation by Christopher Shinn, is directed by Ian Rickson at the American Airlines Theatre (227 West 42nd Street). BroadwayWorld's camera caught the starry cast and crowd as they arrived for the after party for the new production! The cast also includes Lois Markle, Ana Reeder and Helen Carey. Hedda Gabler officially opened on Sunday, January 25th, 2009. This is a limited engagement through March 29th, 2009. Mary-Louise Parker stars as 'Hedda Gabler' in this new interpretation of Henrik Ibsen's modern classic. A woman of dangerous independence restrained by a conventional marriage, Hedda Gabler indulges in a cruel game, amusing herself with the misfortune she inflicts on those around her. As Hedda struggles to balance her wild desires against her chosen life, she sets into motion a manic chain of events that bring her story to a chilling end.

Hart House Theatre scores a major coup in getting the rights to present the Canadian premiere of 'Jerry Springer - The Opera' for a limited run January 16-31.

Young Audiences New York (YANY) Children's Arts Award Honorees made a special visit to P.S. 46 in Upper Manhattan on January 7 to witness a dazzling dance performance by 7- and 8-year-old art students. YANY 2009 honorees Julianna Margulies, Emmy-Award winner; and Rino Scanzoni, Chief Investment Officer, GroupM North America & Chairman - Mediaedge:cia North America, spent the morning observing second grade students during the school's YANY 'Folk Dance Residency.' The honorees met with school administrators and received an in-depth look at the positive impact YANY arts programming has on children in the 180 New York City public schools the organization serves.

Theater veterans Mark Lamos and Michael Ross have been named artistic director and managing director, respectively, of Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut, as the historic theater enters its 79th season. The new leadership team will assume their positions on February 1, 2009.
