Grammy Award-Winner Fabio Luisi's Spring Highlights Include AIDA, CENERENTOLA, and London Symphony Debut

Having just added Genoa's prestigious 2014 Grifo d'Oro to honors that include both Grammy and ECHO Klassik Awards, Fabio Luisilooks forward to conducting a wealth of important operatic and orchestral projects this spring. Highlights include premiering a major new production of Verdi's Aida at the Zurich Opera, where he serves as General Music Director, and presenting Joyce DiDonato's company title role debut in Rossini's La Cenerentola at the Metropolitan Opera, where he is Principal Conductor; the final performance will be transmitted live to movie theaters around the world in the Met's celebrated Live in HD series. Tellingly, both Zurich Opera and the Met are among the six opera houses named as finalists for the 2014 International Opera Award for Best Opera Company. The eminent Italian conductor is no less distinguished in the concert hall, and this spring he will make his London Symphony Orchestra debut, return to guest conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Filarmonica della Scala and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and lead the last two programs of his season with the Zurich Philharmonia.

In addition to music, Vienna: City of Dreams shines a spotlight on Vienna's visual art, film, architecture, politics, science, and history, creating an extensive look at a city that for centuries has drawn artists, dreamers, and innovators from all corners of the world to its dazzling intellectual and artistic life.

Yefim Bronfman, the New York Philharmonic's 2013-14 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence, will be spotlighted in a chamber music concert co-presented with 92nd Street Y. Mr. Bronfman will be joined by Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow; Principal Clarinet Stephen Williamson; Associate Principal, Second Violin Group, Lisa Kim; Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young; and cellist Maria Kitsopoulos for the program, featuring Schubert's Sonatina in A minor; Bartok's Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano; and Brahms's Piano Quintet, Sunday, March 30, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at 92nd Street Y.

Michael Christie Leads Minnesota Orchestra's Classical Series Opening Concerts This Weekend

Conductor Michael Christie will lead the opening concerts of the Minnesota Orchestra's classical season subscription series today, February 20 at 11am; Friday, February 21 at 8pm; and Saturday, February 22 at 8pm as the orchestra returns to the renovated Orchestra Hall (1111 Nicollet Mall) for its homecoming subscription series, which runs from February through July 2014.

Met Music Director James Levine to Conduct Berg's WOZZECK, Begin. 3/6

Met Music Director James Levine will conduct a revival of Berg's Wozzeck, opening March 6 and starring Thomas Hampson and Deborah Voigt in their first-ever performances of the leading roles, Wozzeck and Marie. Levine has led 43 performances of Berg's dark study of a man crushed by society—more than any other conductor in Met history. This season's revival will also star Simon O'Neill as the Drum-Major, Peter Hoare as the Captain, and English bass Clive Bayley as the Doctor.

Johannes Moser to Replace Truls Mork as Soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra, 2/21

Carnegie Hall today announced that cellist Johannes Moser has graciously agreed to step in for Truls Mork as soloist in Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, Op. 107, with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage next Friday, February 21 at 8:00 p.m. Mr. Mork has withdrawn from this appearance due to an injury to his shoulder as a result of a skiing accident; he is expected to make a full recovery in the coming weeks. The remainder of the orchestra's program-to include Richard Strauss's Metamorphosen: A Study for 23 Strings and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, 'Eroica'-remains the same. This concert marks Mr. Moser's Carnegie Hall debut.

Christoph Eschenbach to Conduct Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, 3/15

Carnegie Hall today announced that Christoph Eschenbach has graciously agreed to step in for Daniele Gatti and conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The concert is the penultimate concert by the orchestra in Carnegie Hall's three-week, citywide festival Vienna: City of Dreams, which runs from February 21 to March 16. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's March 15 program-Schubert's Symphony No. 8, 'Unfinished,' and Mahler's Symphony No. 4 with soprano Juliane Banse-remains the same.

Carnegie Hall today announced that conductor Franz Welser-Most has graciously agreed to step in for Daniele Gatti in the concert performance of Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck on Friday, February 28 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The concert by the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is part of Carnegie Hall's three-week, citywide festival Vienna: City of Dreams. Due to a tendinopathy (acute inflammation of the tendon) of both shoulders, Maestro Daniele Gatti-on the advice of his doctors-with deep regret cancels all his professional engagements for the next two months, including his two Vienna: City of Dreams programs, scheduled for February 28 and March 15 at Carnegie Hall. A new conductor for the March 15 concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is to be announced.

George London Foundation to Welcome Lori Guilbeau & John Relyea in Recital, 3/9

Renowned bass John Relyea, who is performing in the Metropolitan Opera's current production of Rusalka with Renée Fleming; rising young soprano Lori Guilbeau, a 2010 George London Award winner; and pianist Warren Jones will share the stage for the second event in the season's George London Foundation Recital Series on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at 4:30 PM at The Morgan Library & Museum. The series presents pairs of outstanding opera singers, many of whom were winners of a George London prize early in their careers or are recent George London Award recipients. Rare Music Artifacts on Display in US for First Time in Carnegie Hall Exhibit, February 25 to May 5

Beginning in late February, Carnegie Hall will display an extraordinary selection of rare musical artifacts-put on view to the public for the first time in the United States-as part of its exhibit,Vienna's Musical Giants: Treasures from the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. Vienna's Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of the Friends of Music) has loaned 25 priceless original manuscripts and artifacts to Carnegie Hall's Archives for this special exhibit, which will include autograph scores and personal items of composers who feature prominently in Vienna's musical history, such as Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler, Mozart, and Johann and Richard Strauss, among others. The items on display reflect the musical works to be performed in coming weeks by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna State Opera, and other artists as part of Carnegie Hall's citywide Vienna: City of Dreams festival. The exhibit will be on display in Carnegie Hall's Rose Museum from Tuesday, February 25 to Monday, May 5, 2014. Admission is free.
