Park Square continues its 41st season this month with the new musical spectacular THE SNOW QUEEN adapted and set to music by Michael Smith. Based on the beloved fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen that inspired the Disney movie Frozen, this new and innovative musical uses folk music to tell the age-old tale of the struggle between good and evil, and the girl who finds the strength to triumph. Doug Scholz-Carlson directs this regional premiere, and Denise Prosek serves as musical director. Jamie Kranz* is the stage manager. Talk Theatre called the new musical '... a smart, artful chamber folk opera. It will dazzle you.'

For one night only BATMAN will hit the stage in an adaptation of ARKHAM ASYLUM: A SERIOUS HOUSE ON SERIOUS EARTH. This staged reading is free to the public.
The Trebuchet Players' production of DESDEMONA: A PLAY ABOUT A HANDKERCHIEF features top-notch acting and an emotional depth so luxurious you could get lost in it. Homegrown talent Bryan Maynard's silly, self-aware, but not self-serious, play WAITING FOR OTHELLO features equally talented performers and loads of humor. Both plays poke fun at ridiculous gender stereotypes while evoking laughter and tears in equal measure.
Cone Man Running Productions and Obsidian Art Space's popular 24 hour play festival, A SPONTANEOUS SMATTERING, was given a seasonal spin for last night's holiday edition. Drawing a crowd of theatre diehards, family, and friends, everyone in attendance was curious to see what these skilled and talented artists would create. Waiting for the show to begin, everyone was buzzing about the #smattering posts they had seen on Facebook, the writers' previous works, and their excitement about what they were about to witness. It doesn't hurt any that everyone was treated to a free shot as they picked up their tickets either.

Historically, English adaptations of Aeschylus' 'Agamemnon' have rendered its ancient Greek poetry into proven English poetic forms. The results have been often good and occasionally brilliant. Yet the original Greek meters provide clues as to how a section of a play was performed (sung, spoken or spoken to musical accompaniment). This has prompted Alexander Harrington, a director known for his mastery of oratorical theater, to attempt something radical: approximating Aeschylus' actual, original poetic meters in a new translation. This intrepid idea has resulted in a script of surprisingly clear stage speech and unusual poetic quality. It will debut November 12 to 29, 2009 in La MaMa's large Annex Theater, performed by The Eleventh Hour Theatre Company.
