This Just In! Jonathan Groff to Take Over as King George in HAMILTON!

The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) announced today that Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff will join the cast of HAMILTON as 'King George' on Tuesday, March 3. Groff, who performed in The Public's recent revival of Hair as well as The Bacchae and The Singing Forest, is replacing Brian d'Arcy James, who will be starring in Something Rotten on Broadway this spring. The world premiere musical HAMILTON, inspired by the book 'Alexander Hamilton' by Ron Chernow, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and directed by Thomas Kail, has been extended three times at The Public due to sold-out demand and will close as scheduled on Sunday, May 3 prior to a Broadway transfer to the Richard Rodgers Theatre beginning July 13 and opening August 6.

Breaking News: THE TEMPEST with Sam Waterston & CYMBELINE Set for The Public's 2015 Shakespeare in the Park Season; Michael Greif, Daniel Sullivan to Direct!

The Public Theater announced the line-up today for the 2015 FREE Shakespeare in the Park season, continuing a 53-year tradition of free theater in Central Park. Since 1962, over five million people have enjoyed more than 150 free productions of Shakespeare and other classical works and musicals at the Delacorte Theater. Conceived by founder Joe Papp as a way to make great theater accessible to all, The Public's free Shakespeare in the Park continues to be the bedrock of the Company's mission to increase access and engage the community. This summer, free Shakespeare in the Park will feature Shakespeare's late romances with THE TEMPEST (May 27-July 5), directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, and CYMBELINE (July 27-August 23), directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan.

The Public Theater will begin performances on Wednesday, March 14 for the return of GATZ, the critically lauded theatrical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. EXCLUSIVE: Regent's Park Theatre's INTO THE WOODS to Play Central Park's Delacorte Theater in 2012

BroadwayWorld.com has learned that the hit open-air production of INTO THE WOODS that played London's Regent's Park Theatre in 2011 is now planning for a transfer to Central Part's Delacorte Theater as part of the Public Theater's Summer 2012 programming. Casting is said to be underway already for the role of 'The Witch' and that the producers are seeking a big name. Nothing officially has been announced on a possible transfer, as The Public is expecting to announce the 2012 summer season at the Delacorte sometime next month. The Public Theatre had no comment by press time.

Single Tickets On Sale For Public's Under The Radar

The Public Theater and the Association of Performing Arts Presenters have announced that single tickets are now on sale for the eighth annual UNDER THE RADAR FESTIVAL, running January 4-15, 2012 at The Public Theater as well as at partner venues around the city.

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Interim Executive Director Joey Parnes) announced today that the Ford Foundation has generously awarded The Public Theater a $2 million grant to support The Public's GOING PUBLIC capital campaign. The largest campaign gift to date after the City's substantial commitment of $28 million, the Ford Foundation will be recognized for this significant grant with the renovated Public Theater lobby being renamed the 'Ford Foundation Lobby.' The $40 million renovation of The Public's long-time home on Lafayette Street is expected to be completed by summer 2012 with a grand reopening in fall 2012.

THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT Closes July 17

Stephen Adly Guirgis' hit Tony® nominated Best Play THE MOTHER WITH THE HAT (aka The Motherf**ker with the Hat), starring Chris Rock, will close on Sunday, July 17th at Broadway's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre (236 West 45th Street). Directed by Anna D. Shapiro, the play opened to critical acclaim on Monday, April 11, 2011.

Gail Papp & Time Warner to be Honored at Public Theater Gala, 6/20

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Interim Executive Director Joey Parnes) announced today that the 2011 Summer Gala will honor Gail Merrifield Papp and Time Warner Inc. for their dedication and commitment to The Public Theater. The Gala will be held on Monday, June 20 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park and will include dinner under the stars, a performance of All's Well That Ends Well, and a cast party immediately following the performance. The benefit event is being chaired by Public Theater Board Members Hilary Feshbach, Liev Schreiber, and Sam Waterston.

Bobby Cannavale Sustains Head Injury Backstage at MOTHERf**k**ER WITH THE HAT

As reported in the New York Daily News, The Motherf**k**er With The Hat star Bobby Cannavale sustained a head injury backstage during last night's performance about an hour into the performance. Though bleeding, the injusry was not serious. The production was paused and an ambulence called as a precaution, Cannavale finished the performance.
