The Museum of Arts and Design presents a full cinematic retrospective of Godfrey Reggio's work this winter with its latest film series, Life with Technology: The Cinema of Godfrey Reggio, from today, January 16 through March 14, 2014.

The Oakland East Bay Symphony Presents NOTES FROM INDIA, 3/28

As they continue a successful and varied 25th anniversary season, Music Director and Conductor Michael Morgan and the Oakland East Bay Symphony present the latest world-wandering chapter in their innovative and popular series exploring symphonic music from various world cultures with Notes from India Friday, March 28, at 8 pm at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The program will include the world premiere of Where Shadow Chases Light, a new work by young Indian composer Juhi Bansal in her Oakland East Bay Symphony debut, commissioned as part of the Symphony'sNew Visions/New Vistas Commissioning Project, supported by a grant from The James Irvine Foundation. The evening will also feature sitar soloist Stephen Slawek performing Ravi Shankar's Concert No. 1 for Sitar and Orchestra, excerpts from Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar's Passages and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92. A pre-concert talk by John Kendall Bailey and Juhi Bansal will take place at 7pm and concert is sponsored in part by Mueller Nicholls Builders. For information, visit www.oebs.org .

Nashville Ballet to Present ATTITUDE, 2/14-16

Celebrate your love of Nashville this Valentine's Day, as Nashville Ballet's Attitude marries two very uniquely Nashville past times: live music and dance. Center for Contemporary Opera to Pay Tribute to Hans Werner Henze with Performance of THE RUNAWAY SLAVE, 1/16-17

The Center for Contemporary Opera (CCO) is proud to pay tribute to composer Hans Werner Henze, who died in 2012 at the age of 86, with performances of his El Cimarron (The Runaway Slave), featuring baritone Eric McKeever in the title role. Not performed in New York since 1986, El Cimarron has music direction by Sara Jobin, and stage direction by Eugenia Arsenis, singled out as stage director by Miguel Barnet, author of the book upon which the opera is based. Performances are January 16 & 17, 7:30 PM, at Symphony Space's Leonard Nimoy Theater, Broadway & 95th Street, NYC (entrance on 95th Street, West of Broadway)

Miller Theatre to Open BACH, REVISITED Series with Kaija Saariaho, 2/6

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts announces the opening of the 2013-14 BACH, REVISITED SERIES. The series returns with a contemporary twist: a major living composer curates each of the three concerts, presenting their own work in the context of a Bach masterpiece. Saariaho + Bach is set for Thursday, February 6, 2014. Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho pairs her work Frises with its inspiration, Bach's Partita in D minor for solo violin, in a solo recital by Jennifer Koh.

OPERA America Announces Opera Fund: Repertoire Development Recipients

OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, is pleased to announce it has awarded grants to nine opera companies through its Opera Fund: Repertoire Development grant program. These grants provide vital financial support to opera companies developing new North American opera and music-theater works.

Bang on a Can All-Stars to Perform at Carnegie Hall, 2/1

The Bang on a Can All-Stars, known for combining "the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble" (New York Times), will give a Carnegie Hall Family Concert on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 1pm at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, complementing Bang on a Can co-founder David Lang's season-long curation as the holder of the 2013-2014 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall. Lang will host the program, which includes Tan Dun's Concerto for Six (2000), Don Byron's Eugene with video of American TV iconoclast Ernie Kovacs (2000), and selections from David Lang's Cheating, Lying, Stealing (1995). Before the concert at 12pm, Bang on a Can's social engagement wing Found Sound Nation will host its mobile studio, equipped for concert goers to spontaneously create and record original music, in the Parterre Lobby of Zankel Hall.

Joyce DiDonato and David Hyde Pierce to Host Ninth Annual Opera News Awards, 4/13

Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor David Hyde Pierce will take a star turn together when they co-host the Ninth Annual Opera News Awards, set to take place on Sunday, April 13, 2014, in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel in New York City. They will be joined by a distinguished line-up of presenters – Luca Pisaroni, Susan Graham, Renata Scotto, Eva Wagner-Pasquier and Francesca Zambello – who will pay tribute to five superb artists who have made an invaluable contribution to the art form: the late director Patrice Chéreau, tenor Juan Diego Flórez, mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig,bass-baritone James Morris, and soprano Nina Stemme. First introduced in 2005, the Opera News Awards gala dinner, which features the hosts and presenters speaking about the awardees and introducing video performance clips, has become one of the most anticipated opera events of the season: an evening of celebration, appreciation, reuniting and celebrity-spotting that is without parallel in the industry.

Houston Grand Opera to Launch 2014 With Three World Premieres, American Premiere and More

The opening months of 2014 bring into focus the strengths of Houston Grand Opera (HGO), which launches the new year with an extraordinary line-up. This comprises the world premieres of three important new commissions -Ricky Ian Gordon's A Coffin in Egypt, named one of the twelve "must-see opera events of the season" (Opera News), and two works exploring Houston's Vietnamese and Indian communities, courtesy of HGO's award-winning Song of Houston project; the hotly anticipated American premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's long-suppressed Holocaust opera, The Passenger, in the production that took Europe by storm; the first American presentation of a visionary and groundbreaking treatment of Das Rheingold by Catalan's La Fura dels Baus; a new HGO production of Carmen from Broadway sensation Rob Ashford; a revival of Rigoletto; and a restaged production of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, which boasts designs by fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi. As the Houston Press recently noted, "Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers is thinking bigger than ever."
