Long Beach Opera to Present the Southern California Debut of THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER, 3/16-22

Perhaps the most controversial opera of the 20th century makes its Southern California debut when Long Beach Opera (LBO) stages John Adams' The Death of Klinghoffer on March 16 and March 22 at the Terrace Theater in downtown Long Beach. This powerful and unsettling work chronicles the 1985 hijacking of the Mediterranean cruise ship Achille Lauro by Palestinian terrorists and the murder of disabled Jewish-American passenger, Leon Klinghoffer. LBO's production is a partner presentation of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 'Minimalist Jukebox' Festival.

Piffaro Will Represent The Renaissance in Deutsche Grammophon's HISTORY OF CLASSICAL MUSIC Box Set

Piffaro, The Renaissance Band is honored to be selected to represent the Renaissance in Deutsche Grammophon's massive new 'History of Classical Music' box set. Piffaro's debut recording for DG's Archiv label, 1995's Canzoni e Danze: Wind Music from Renaissance Italy, is the third in a 100-disc series that spans Gregorian chant to Philip Glass and recording artists from Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert to Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to Pierre Boulez and his Ensemble Intercontemporain.

DAS RHEINGOLD, A COFFIN IN EGYPT and More Set for Spring 2014 at Houston Grand Opera

The new year has already brought notable success for Houston Grand Opera (HGO), where the hotly anticipated American premiere of the long-lost Holocaust opera The Passenger-hailed by the Associated Press as 'the latest coup for a company known for producing new works'-took the national and local press by storm, and where the company's Rigoletto revival was pronounced 'glorious' (Theater Jones). These accolades come at an exciting time for the company, which continues this season's extraordinary line-up with the launch of the first American presentation of a visionary and groundbreaking treatment of Das Rheingold by La Fura dels Baus; the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon's A Coffin in Egypt, named one of the twelve 'must-see opera events of the season' (Opera News); a new HGO production of Carmen from Broadway sensation Rob Ashford; and Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, which boasts designs by fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi.

Kronos Quartet and Friends to Perform in 40th Anniversary Celebration at Carnegie Hall, 3/28

Carnegie Hall celebrates the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking contemporary music ensemble Kronos Quartet with a one-night-only concert in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage featuring collaborations with some of the group's close colleagues and longtime artistic partners on Friday, March 28 at 8:00 p.m. The program includes the world premiere of Terry Riley's The Serquent Risadome, commissioned by Carnegie Hall and written for the anniversary, which marks the 27th new work for Kronos by the acclaimed California maverick composer.

The Miller Theatre's Composer Portraits Series Presents UNSUK CHIN Featuring Ensemble Signal, 3/13

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts continues the 2013-14 Composer Portraits series with Unsuk Chin featuring Ensemble Signal: Brad Lubman, conductor, Rachel Calloway,mezzo-soprano, Oliver Hagen, piano, Bill Solomon, percussion, and Ning Yu, piano. The show is Thursday, March 13, 2014, 8:00 p.m. at the Miller Theatre (2960 Broadway at 116th Street) and Tickets are $20-$30 and for Students with valid ID they are $12-$18.

THERESE RAQUIN to Open at Finborough Theatre, March 25

Following the sell-out success of its workshop as part of Vibrant 2012 - A Festival of Finborough Playwrights, and as part of the Finborough Theatre's acclaimed Celebrating British Music Theatre series, the world premiere of a new musical adaptation of the classic French novel Therese Raquin opens at the multi-award-winning Finborough Theatre for a four week run, opening Tuesday, 25 March 2014 (Press Night: Thursday, 27 March 2014 at 7.30pm), starring Julie Atherton and Olivier Award nominee Tara Hugo.

LA Phil Announces 2014-15 Season at Walt Disney Concert Hall

Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and President and CEO Deborah Borda today announced the 2014/15 season of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This new season, the orchestra's 96th, is devoted to moving music forward by presenting an ever-evolving vision through a series of programs that demonstrate the artistry of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a leading orchestra of the 21st century, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel.

Venice Baroque Orchestra to Play Jorgensen, 2/23/

Countertenor sensation Philippe Jaroussky returns to Jorgensen, this time with the Venice Baroque Orchestra, on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 3 p.m. Jaroussky's 'pure, radiant voice' (the LA Times declares) thrilled Jorgensen's audience two seasons ago with Apollo's Fire Baroque Orchestra performing Handel and Vivaldi arias and concertos. Now, after a nine-month sabbatical, Jaroussky is back on a world tour with the VBO for an exciting program of Italian arias. The program highlights the legendary musical battle between the composers and leading castrati of the 18th century, specifically George Frideric Handel and Carestini vs. Farinelli and Nicola Porpora.

Miller Theatre Opens BACH, REVISITED Series with Kaija Saariaho Tonight

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts announces the opening of the 2013-14 BACH, REVISITED SERIES. The series returns with a contemporary twist: a major living composer curates each of the three concerts, presenting their own work in the context of a Bach masterpiece. Saariaho + Bach is set for tonight, February 6, 2014. Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho pairs her work Frises with its inspiration, Bach's Partita in D minor for solo violin, in a solo recital by Jennifer Koh.

Northlight Theatre to Bring CHAPATTI to Galway Arts Festival, July 2014; Debuts in Chicago, March 7-April 13

Chicago-Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, announces a forthcoming artistic exchange with Ireland through the co-production of Chapatti, a new work developed through Northlight's Interplay program. The co-production of Chapatti will premiere at Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd in Skokie, March 7-April 13, 2014, and will open at the Galway Arts Festival in July 2014. Chapatti, by acclaimed Irish playwright Christian O' Reilly, will be directed by Artistic Director BJ Jones and will feature John Mahoney and Penny Slusher.

Massive Mid-Century Masterpieces to Link Two Modern Composers in Jacaranda Concert, 2/22

Jacaranda's 10th anniversary season continues on Saturday, February 22, 2014 with a dinner break - a break that separates the performances of two 20-movement mid-twentieth-century masterworks by John Cage and Olivier Messiaen. Each cycle is played by an American pianist with whom the music has become synonymous: Adam Tendler and Christopher Taylor, respectively. The consecutive concerts (Tendler at 5:00 p.m. and Taylor at 7:30 p.m.) will take place at First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica, 1220 Second Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.
