Music has an almost unmatched potential to inspire, to move, on occasion to lift an entire society in a cultural exploration, in the pursuit of cultural ideals. And there are great figures, teachers, performers - artists - who show us the way. Sometimes their impact is so great that their work reaches people who have never even heard of them, nor dream that they have somehow impacted their life. One such figure is Long Yu, the preeminent Chinese conductor, who led the drive to establish a hunger for classical music in his country.
Today OZ, Nashville's first contemporary arts center, announces its 2014-15 season, which runs September 12, 2014 - June 27, 2015. The season is bookended by premieres, beginning with two performances (September 12 & 13) of Tim Robbins' interpretation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, produced and acted by the company he founded and leads, The Actors' Gang, in the production's first U.S. engagement outside of the company's home theater in Los Angeles. OZ's 2014-15 program will conclude with the world premiere (June 18-20) of Memory Rings, the latest multi-media stage production from innovative New York City-based puppetry collective Phantom Limb Company.
The acclaimed Days and Nights Festival, founded and curated by Philip Glass, returns for its 2014 edition September 25-28 with four days of performances in Big Sur and Carmel, CA. Highlights of the long weekend include public radio host Ira Glass' new live show, Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host; Brian Greene's Icarus at the Edge of Time accompanied by a live performance of Glass' score conducted by Michael Riesman; an evening of music and spoken word with Glass on piano, spoken word artists Jerry Quickley and Mike Garry, and renowned instrumentalists Tim Fain (vioin), Matt Haimovitz (cello) and Jaron Lanier; and a screening of Visitors, the latest collaboration between Glass and director Godfrey Reggio, accompanied by a live Q&A. Washington National Opera (WNO) presents the world premiere of An American Soldier, June 13-14, 2014 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. An American Soldier features music by composer Huang Ruo and a libretto by David Henry Hwang. This new work, to be performed in English, is the second hourlong opera created under the auspices of the American Opera Initiative, WNO's commissioning program for contemporary American opera. An American Soldier is directed by David Paul and a chamber orchestra is conducted by Steven Jarvi; both are alumni of WNO's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program.

The Jewish Museum and Bang on a Can are launching a new partnership to produce a series of dynamic musical performances at the Museum from June 2014 to May 2015. Inspired by the Jewish Museum's diverse slate of exhibitions, the five programs will take place throughout the year across the Museum at Fifth Avenue and 92nd Street, Manhattan. The partnership kicks off with Asphalt Orchestra performing during the Museum Mile Festival on June 10, followed by a July 10 concert featuring works by Minimalist composers such as Philip Glass and Louis Andriessen in conjunction with Other Primary Structures, an exhibition of global sculpture from the 1960s.

In 1945, Robert De Niro, Sr.'s work was included in the Autumn Salon at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century gallery along with that of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. The next year, he had his first solo exhibition at Guggenheim's gallery, an extremely prestigious honor for the young figurative painter. But while De Niro continued to show at the highly regarded Charles Egan Gallery throughout the 1950s, his career began to slip out of the critical spotlight, and he struggled for recognition in subsequent decades.
