On Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 7pm, Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, known for his 'dark-hued tone and razor-sharp technique' (The New York Times) and pianist/composer Timo Andres, will perform a concert at National Sawdust (80 North 6th St.). The performance is part of Andres' engagement as a National Sawdust curator for the 2016-2017 season, and will include a selection of works from Kutik's new album, Words Fail, out October 28 on Marquis Classics, including two of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (arr. Friedrich Hermann), the New York premiere of Andres' Words Fail, and the world premiere of Michael Gandolfi's Arioso Doloroso/Estatico, both of which Kutik commissioned for the album. The duo will also perform Nico Muhly's Compare Notes, Stravinsky's Suite Italienne, and the world premiere of Andres' arrangement of a short work by Janacek titled Words Fail.

Colorado Ballet's second season of Attitude on Santa Fe will feature three new ballets choreographed and performed by Colorado Ballet dancers on September 23 and 24 in the Black Box Theater at the Armstrong Center for Dance, 1075 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO.  The September 23 Attitude will only include the performance and the September 24 Attitude will include a catered dinner that features a three course meal and wine prior to the performance.

Ludovico Einaudi - chart-topping composer and pianist behind music for Oscar-winning film Black Swan, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar and box-office record breaker The Intouchables - returns to Hamer Hall on 14 February 2017 to perform his latest release, Elements. The album will be visually brought to life for audiences through the use of striking multimedia and lighting.

I attended the world premiere of THE HUNGER, a new operatic work by Donnacha Dennehy in collaboration with the group Alarm Will Sound, and co-produced by Opera Theatre of St. Louis this weekend, and I was blown away by how affecting and compelling this 90 minute piece is. It's a multi-media exercise that attempts to convey a sense of the seven year famine that Ireland suffered through from 1845 - 1852. It was a time of starvation and widespread disease that saw many families emigrate to other countries, cutting the overall population by a nearly a quarter. This production at the Touhill (September 17, 2016) is both harrowing and invigorating in equal measure, and an absolute must-see for people interested in modern opera.

Jazz pianist Aaron Diehl will join Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic for the 2016-17 season Opening Gala Concert, performing Gershwin's Concerto in F in his New York Philharmonic debut, Today, September 21, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. The concert launches the New York Philharmonic's 175th anniversary season and Music Director Alan Gilbert's farewell season with a program honoring the Philharmonic's legacy of premiering important works, particularly music connected to New York City. As previously announced, the concert will also feature the New York Premiere of John Corigliano's Stomp for Orchestra and Dvo?ak's Symphony No. 9, From the New World.

The Dramatists Guild Fund and Program Chairs Michael Korie, Laurence O'Keefe, and Diana Son have announced the 2016-2017 class of DG Fellows James Christy, Khiyon Hursey, Patricia Ione Lloyd, Michael R. Jackson, C.A. Johnson, David Mallamud, Zoey Martinson, Madeline Myers, Nicole Pandolfo, and Len Schiff.

It was announced today that a number of Broadway veterans are set to be awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama later this month.

New York Theatre Ballet will present a new installment of its highly acclaimed Legends & Visionaries series at Danspace Project (131 E 10th St, NYC, 10003) on October 6 and 8, 2016 at 8pm, as part of Danspace Project's Community ACCESS series*.  The evenings will include the World Premiere of a new piece by Antonia Franceschi set to an original musical score by Claire van Kampen.  

Cheryl Ann Allen will return to the stage with a new show entitled I'm A New Yorker written and directed by Ian Finkel. I'm A New Yorker will debut at Don't Tell Mama's (343 West 46th Street) today, September 14 at 6:30.

The progressive New York City-based string quartet Brooklyn Rider celebrates the release of its new collaborative album with Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter in a concert on Thursday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. The album, So Many Things-to be released by Naive Records on September 30-features new works by the quartet's violinist and founding member Colin Jacobsen ("For 60 Cents") and by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw ("Cant voi l'aube"). Both were commissioned by Carnegie Hall for its 125 Commissions Project and will receive their New York premieres at the October 13 concert.

Fifty women will leave everything behind. They board a boat in North Africa and flee across the Mediterranean. They are escaping forced marriage in their homeland, hoping for protection and assistance, seeking asylum in Greece.

San Francisco Opera presents the world premiere of Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng's Dream of the Red Chamber, with a libretto by the composer and David Henry Hwang, in six performances from September 10-29, 2016. Commissioned by San Francisco Opera, the work is a co-production with the Hong Kong Arts Festival and will be performed March 17-18, 2017 at the Grand Theatre in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre as part of its 45th annual festival. Based on one of the quintessential works of world literature, Sheng and Hwang's opera explores the characters at the heart of Chinese author Cao Xueqin's 18th-century novel and communicates their story as a vivid musical and theatrical experience.
