Since its debut in 1892, THE NUTCRACKER, based on E.T.A. Hoffman's 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,' has been a holiday staple, its music, by Romantic composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, ubiquitous. And, since 1987, Ben Stevenson's THE NUTCRACKER has been a Houston institution.
Miller Theatre inaugurates a new holiday tradition, a playful production that brings to life Saint-Saens' musical 'salute to feathers, fur, and fins' - CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS. A modern twist on Victorian toy theater, this imaginative staging combines music, scenic elements, puppetry, and movement, plus the clever verses of Ogden Nash. Curtain-raisers from the 16th Century to present-day set the stage and kindle the spirit of the holidays. Just about an hour in length, this family-friendly presentation is the perfect December treat to delight imaginative audiences of all ages.
Celebrating her 15th solo appearance at Carnegie Hall, classical pianist Katya Grineva presents an evening of holiday music and virtuoso romantic masterpieces for one night only, Saturday, December 26th at 8:00 p.m. The Russian native, whose dream it was to one day play at the iconic venue, is the first woman to perform as a soloist at Carnegie this many times. Known for her deep connetion to the Romantics, Katya mixes staples by Mozart and Chopin with various seasonal chestnuts. Performing works from her latest album A Classical Holiday, Katya showcases new arrangements of Christmas classics including Silent Night, Sleigh Ride, and My Favorite Things as well as traditional carols and pieces from The Nutcracker. Inland Pacific Ballet, returns with its spectacular production of The Nutcracker, the classic holiday story danced to Tchaikovsky's beloved score. Critically acclaimed Inland Pacific Ballet (IPB) brings The Nutcracker to life with dazzling sets complete with falling snow, an antique original Albany Flyer One Horse Open Sleigh, a 40-foot Chinese Dragon, beautiful costumes handmade in-house at IPB's costume department, and a cast of 80 dancers.

The curtain comes down on Pacific Northwest Ballet's 42nd season with its annual Season Encore Performance, a crowd-pleasing reprise of some of PNB's greatest hits. An evening of thrilling selections and inspired performances, the program will feature PNB's entire Company, along with the mighty PNB Orchestra (now celebrating its 25th Anniversary) under the baton of Music Director/Principal Conductor Emil de Cou. The evening also celebrates the extraordinary careers of PNB's departing dancers with George Balanchine's Serenade and selections from his Jewels, the local premiere of a work by former PNB Company member Andrew Bartee, a sneak preview of Jessica Lang's The Calling(to be presented as part of PNB's 2015-2016 season) and others. This 30-member company, under the artistic direction of Gelsey Kirkland and Michael Chernov, is comprised of nineteen dancers and eleven apprentices, and is based in Lower Manhattan.
