The Met Sets 2015-16 Season: 25 Operas, 6 Premieres & More

The Metropolitan Opera's 2015-16 season will present 227 opera performances in a varied repertory, ranging from rarely performed masterpieces to perennial audience favorites. The season features six new productions and 18 revivals, starring the world's greatest singers and conductors, many of them in repertory they have not previously performed with the company.

Anita Rachvelishvili to Star in Great Performance at the Met's CARMEN, 2/22

Acclaimed director Richard Eyre's production of Carmen stars Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili in the title role of the seductive gypsy, a part she has sung to acclaim at many of the world's leading opera houses. Aleksandrs Antonenko sings the obsessed soldier Don José, soprano Anita Hartig is Micaëla, andIldar Abdrazakov is the toreador Escamillo, led by Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado. Carmen will be broadcast on THIRTEEN'S Great Performances at the Met Sunday, February 22 at 12 p.m. on PBS. (In New York THIRTEEN will air the opera at 12:30 p.m.)

Verdi's MACBETH to Air as Part of GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET, 2/1

Giuseppe Verdi's adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth comes to THIRTEEN's Great Performances at the Met with an internationally renowned cast headed by Russian star soprano Anna Netrebko in her North American debut as the fatally ambitious Lady Macbeth. Serbian baritone Željko Lu?i? sings the title role; German bass René Pape is among his victims of his bloody rise to the throne as Banquo, and Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja sings the role of his heroic rival Macduff.

The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera's award-winning series of live transmissions to more than 2,000 movie theaters in 65 countries around the world, will feature ten operas in the 2014-15 season, including all six new productions in the Met season. All ten performances, transmitted live from the Met stage, will feature the world's finest singers, conductors, and theatrical artists.

Met Opera Musicians Releases Statement on Negotiations

At the request of the U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), the Metropolitan Opera, Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, and the American Guild of Musical Artists have agreed to a process for continuing their discussions. It was recommended by the FMCS and all three parties have jointly agreed to retain an independent financial analyst to perform a due diligence financial study of the Met and to render a non-binding report to the parties to assist them in reaching new collective bargaining agreements. During this process the employees covered will continue to perform their regular assignments under the terms of their contracts, which expired at midnight July 31, 2014.

From the Musicians Union: Met Opera Musicians Rally to Extend Good Faith Negotiations

This morning, the Met Orchestra and supporters rallied in Dante Park in front of Lincoln Center before resuming federally mediated negotiations under a 72-hour threat of lockout imposed by opera manager Peter Gelb. The musicians and other Met Opera artists and craftspeople, along with elected officials in NYC and the New York Times in an editorial, have called on Peter Gelb to continue negotiating in good faith and lift his threat of lockout, which Gelb has extended to 72-hours past the contract deadline expiring at midnight last night.
