New York's jazz heart wasn't always located downtown. Once it was found on 52nd Street and before that on 125th, and for many decades its most powerful radio voice has been WKCR-FM on the campus of Columbia University. Just a few yards away, jazz finds an uptown home at Columbia's Miller Theatre. This season, Melissa Smey has programmed groups from the top of her wish list in a Jazz series that begins with the inventive Lionel Loueke Trio and the Renee Rosnes Quartet.

The Kitano Welcomes Janis Mann, 6/10-11

Recognized by critics as 'one of the very best jazz singers in Southern California', L.A.-based vocalist Janis Mann brings an all-star band to the Kitano. A native New Yorker, Janis returns to her roots for two nights on June 10th and 11th. Joining her is the stellar trio of Kenny Werner on piano, Johannes Weidenmueller on bass, and Tim Horner on drums. On Saturday night renowned trumpeter Terell Stafford joins the group along with Martin Wind, who takes over on bass.

The Monterey Jazz Festival, a nonprofit leader in jazz education since its inception in 1958 and JazzTimes Readers' Poll multi-year winner for Best Jazz Festival, is proud to announce its annual Next Generation Jazz Festival, April 1 - 3, 2011 in downtown Monterey. The weekend-long event, devoted to the future of jazz, includes the Next Generation Jazz Festival Jazz Competition with Big Bands, Combos, Vocal Ensembles, and individual musicians vying for a spot on the stages of the 54th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival. The event will be open to the public, free of charge.
