Independent Theatre Inc. Presents RED VELVET

When, in 1933, the legendary African American actor/singer, Paul Robeson, played Othello in London, it was seen by audiences and critics alike as being a landmark in theatre history - and very shocking! Especially when he kissed British actress Peggy Ashcroft! The role of Shakespeare's 'Moor' had always been played by white actors in black makeup.

Following Onstage Collapse, Peter Land Departs RUTHLESS! Off-Broadway

RUTHLESS! The Musical's leading man, Peter Land, collapsed onstage at the top of the second act on Friday evening, July 17th. EMT's arrived on the scene and Mr. Land was transported to the hospital where he received emergency surgery for a tear in the aorta. His recovery is going extremely well and he was even discharged from the hospital earlier this week. Paul Pecorino has assumed the role of Sylvia St. Croix and Mr. Land hopes to return to the show in the near future. Author Joel Paley bravely filled in for several performances in the week following the accident (triumphantly, according to all eyewitnesses).

Shakespeare Uncovered Preview: ROMEO AND JULIET with Joseph Fiennes

In the final episode of Shakespeare Uncovered - Series II, Joseph Fiennes takes a look at Shakespeare's most often performed play, Romeo and Juliet, and the relevance it has in our world today. It is the story of two teenagers whose deep, profound love heals a deeply pathetic hatred between warring families and leaves the audience with a puzzling redemption. Love and death, conflict and pride, this play has it all.

The Staples of Shakespeare: Gender-Bending from TWELFTH NIGHT to 'VERONA'

TWELFTH NIGHT and RICHARD III, starring the Tony-winning, incomparable Mark Rylance, have adopted a creative leniency with the characters' gender - though Shakespeare's staple to command his characters to don the garb of a member of the opposite sex, for reasons interwoven in love and lust, greed and vengeance, is a common thread running throughout his romantic repertoire.

BWW Reviews: American Ballet Theatre's Triple Bill

I was looking forward to American Ballet Theater's triple bill on May 21 with anticipation, because I had seen one of the ballets, Frederick Ashton's A Month in the County, years ago, and always held it in warm esteem. I remembered how moved I was as the curtain fell on the dancer (was it Lynn Seymour?) portraying the heroine, Natalia Petrovna, alone on the stage with nothing but a loveless and frustrating future awaiting her.

STAGE TUBE: Frederick Ashton's A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY, February 12, 1976

A Month in the Country, considered one of Frederick Ashton's most affecting and beautiful ballets, premiered on February 12, 1976. Based on the late 19th-century play by Ivan Turgenev, the ballet tells the story of the hopeless love of Natalia, the bored wife of a wealthy landowner, for her son's tutor, Alexei, in mid 19th century Russia.
