Legendary designers WILLIAM IVEY LONG and BOB CROWLEY are among the four recipients of 2009 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards to be presented at a ceremony this Friday, March 27 at 6:30pm, at the Hudson Theatre (145 West 44th Street). Five-time Tony Award winning costume designer William Ivey Long will receive the 2009 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for theatrical costume design, and, for his achievements as both a costume and scenic designer, Bob Crowley (also a five-time Tony Award winner) will receive the TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards' special Robert L. B. Tobin Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatrical Design.

Novelist Richard Wright's searing novel Native Son aroused violent controversy from the moment it was published. The saga of a young American black man who becomes an unrepentant killer, the book was hailed as an uncompromising indictment of the nation's racial divisions and social injustice, and condemned as feeding white bigotry while excusing crime. Naturally, Orson Welles, then the most dynamic force in American theater, thought it was just the kind of story his Mercury Theater needed to tackle.

A two-part repertory production of Charles Dickens' epic 'The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby' will headline PlayMakers Repertory Company's 34th season, announced Thursday (March 5) by producing artistic director Joseph Haj. Also during its 2009-2010 mainstage season, PlayMakers will present Arthur Miller's wartime drama 'All My Sons,' the comedy classic 'The Importance of Being Earnest' by Oscar Wilde and the regional premiere of 'Opus' by Michael Hollinger.
