During the West Coast premiere of UNDERNEATH by Olivier Award winner Pat Kinevane, be prepared to be called upon and repeatedly referred to during the show if you challenge the audience's attention by unwrapping candy during his performance, drop something on the floor, or just happen to be seated in the front row. That's because Kinevane wants you to pay attention to the play's theme, that "you can never know what might be around the next corner so go out and LIVE your life," he begs of us. With his otherworldly appearance, completely covered in black clothing and face paint highlighted with gold, there is no way you won't pay attention to his mesmerizing performance on a darkened set highlighted with pieces of gold lame which he often uses to reflect light onto the audience.

Center Theatre Group received submissions from 76 local theatre companies from North Hollywood to San Pedro, Topanga to Sierra Madre for the inaugural Block Party: Celebrating Los Angeles Theatre at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Block Party will highlight some of the remarkable work being done on stages throughout Los Angeles by fully producing three previously staged productions.
Berkeley Rep today announced that Sandra Tsing Loh's autobiographical narrative, The Madwoman in the Volvo, will be staged as a special presentation in the Peet's Theatre. The three-person show is directed by Berkeley Rep's Associate Director Lisa Peterson, who directed the production's previous runs at South Coast Repertory and Pasadena Playhouse. Performances of The Madwoman in the Volvo begin on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 and run until Sunday, January 15, 2017. Tickets will be available to the general public on Monday, October 10, 2016. Tickets start at $60 and include a beverage.

Greenway Arts Alliance Presents: George Orwell's 1984, directed by Kate Jopson as the first production of their novel to stage program Greenway Reads. 300 Fairfax High School students are reading the novel and will attend matinee's of the theatrical production. The adaptation by Alan Lyddiard creates an interactive and engaging experience for audience members. Jopson said, "We're trying to create an immersive experience. The elements of the play and its themes are all around us in the real world. We try to emphasize that and as soon as you arrive at the theater there's not anywhere you're not in the set of 1984, even in the lobby and bathrooms."

When he meets Magadelena, he is less enamored, not realizing that Magadelena and the veiled lady are one and the same person. A madcap comedy of disguise and deception ensues.
Rubicon Theatre Company presents Moonlight and Magnolias, the hilarious fly on the wall comedy by Ron Hutchinson about how the most iconic film in Hollywood history almost didn't get made. THE HAIRY APE at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble through July 17 tells the story of Robert 'Yank' Smith, a brutish ship laborer who searches for a sense of belonging in a world controlled by the wealthy elite who he believes only see him as a dirty and hairy ape rather than a real human being. As head coal stoker on an ocean liner, Yank (Haile D'Alan whose incredible and extremely physical performance lifts the entire production to the highest artistic quality) is in his element where he rules his dark, hot, hard-drinking smoky world while managing a group of six other coal stokers who seem to prove their resemblance to simians no matter what they do thanks to the brilliant and totally physical ape-like choreography of their every move by director Steven Berkoff. It's truly a wonder as to how the ensemble manages to keep their energy at such a high level throughout the entire show.
