Music has the power to touch the human spirit, transcending time, place, boundaries and language and spurring understanding and connection. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Manfred Honeck are deeply committed to music's ability to promote and spread a spiritual and universal message, and to that end invite the public to two free "Music for the Spirit" concerts on Thursday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair and on Saturday, November 22 at 8 p.m. at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School in Cranberry.
The Mimesis Ensemble presents 'Beyond Boundaries,' a program featuring vocal works with a social commentary. The concert will explore songs from the 20th and 21st centuries which examine topics ranging from the ancient story of Gilgamesh, the Americanization of Japan in the 1850's to the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's.
On Monday, November 17, 2014 at 10:00 p.m., New York Festival of Songpresents a special NYFOS After Hours celebrating the record release ofCANCIÓN AMOROSA: SONGS OF SPAIN with Corinne Winters and Steven Blier. The album is released the same day on GPR Records, distributed by Naxos.
The Italian Academy hosts the inaugural concert of *The Stefan Wolpe Fund featuring world premieres and works by Charles Wuorinen, Jonathan Dawe, Matthew Greenbaum and William Anderson on Thursday, October 30th at 8pm. Also on the program, a New York premiere for string sextet by Charles Wuorinen. Featured artists: JACK Quartet, pianist Steven Beck, Vox n Plux, violist Miranda Cuckson and cellist Jay Campbell. This concert was produced by Zaidee Parkinson and Alanna Maharajh Stone with generous support from *The Roger Shapiro Fund for New Music.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) today announced the participants of the third cycle of the BAM Professional Development Program (BAM PDP), led by BAM and the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland. The companies for this session represent mixed disciplines ranging from dance to theater to opera. Chosen by a BAM-convened panel, the organizations taking part in this session are Encompass New Opera Theatre, Satellite Collective, Summation Dance, and Treehouse Shakers. As with the previous sessions, the DeVos Institute extended invitations to a group of organizations to apply for the training portion of the BAM PDP-expanding the program's reach beyond Brooklyn-based companies. These additional organizations taking part in the program areBalletNext, Beth Morrison Projects, S? Percussion, and Zvi Dance.

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, one of America's most honored and sought-after composers, marked her 75th birthday on April 30, 2014, and her 2014-15 season is bracketed by the premieres of two major works. It begins in September at the ninth quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, with the world premiere of a work commissioned by the competition; she is also a member of the jury. And in April, flutist Trudy Kane performs the world premiere of Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra with the Frost Symphony Orchestra.

Bargemusic Here and Now Series presents “Tokyo to New York.” The concert will feature premiers composed or arranged for critically acclaimed clarinetist and hichiriki player Thomas Piercy by Tokyo- and NYC-based composers. Mr. Piercy will be joined in the concert by one of Japan's leading classical and contemporary pianists, Noritaka Ito. The music - in a wide variety of styles - includes premiers by Ned Rorem (Pulitzer- and Grammy-Award), Fernando Otero (Latin-Grammy Award); Toshio Hosokawa (Suntory Music Award), Yuichi Matsumoto (Takemitsu Award), Masatora Goya (Jerome Fund Award), and Senri Oe (major Japanese pop-star, now NYC-based jazz composer). Other premiers on the program are by Japanese composers Tomo Hirayama, Kaito Nakahori, Atsushi Yoshinaka; and premiers by NYC-based composers Trevor Bachman, Peri Mauer, Gene Pritsker, and David Wolfson. Many of the composers will be in attendance; pianist Ito and several of the composers will travel from Japan for the concert.

Tonight, May 27 at 7:00pm, the Russian American Foundation (RAF) will present 'Philippe Quint & Friends,' a benefit concert hosted by the renowned Russian-American violinist at the New York Times Building's Times Center (242 West 41st Street). The evening will feature performances by special guests such as Joshua Bell, John Corigliano, Josh Ralph, Emily Bergl, Michael Bacon, William Wolfram, the Matt Herskowitz Trio, and Quint's own Argentine tango group, the Quint Quintet, featuring featuring JP Jofre, Octavio Brunetti, Oren Fader, and Pedro Giraudo. This concert will mark the opening of the 12th Annual Russian Heritage Month® and all proceeds from the evening will benefit the Russian American Foundation's Jewish Heritage Education Program (a 501(c)3 organization).
